With determination and heart, Johnie is turning responsibility into opportunity and building his future

Johnie, a San Antonio native and proud student at St. Philip’s College, is excited about the future and the opportunities available through the Alamo Colleges. Growing up in a family as the oldest of five siblings, Johnie naturally stepped into a leadership role at an early age. Managing household responsibilities and caring for his younger siblings helped him develop a strong sense of accountability, maturity, and reliability.

He also stood out on the football field, serving as the starting quarterback throughout middle and high school, earning All-District titles. This experience taught him the value of leadership, motivation, and teamwork—skills that continue to guide him in both his academic and professional journey and that directly support his growing passion for the construction industry.

Johnie has always been drawn to construction because of its lasting impact on communities. He sees construction as the foundation of modern life—from homes to commercial spaces—and is pursuing a degree in Construction Technology at St. Philip’s College to build a meaningful career in the field.

"I see countless opportunities ahead once I complete my degree. This scholarship is a tremendous help toward achieving my goals.”

Currently balancing work and school, Johnie remains fully committed to his goals. He was recently selected to receive the Home Building Scholarship, a recognition that has motivated him even further. “Once I made the decision to pursue this field, I committed myself fully, knowing it was the right choice,” he shares.

Johnie’s immediate plan is to gain hands-on experience with a construction company, applying classroom knowledge to a range of residential and commercial projects. He’s focused on developing his technical skills, understanding project timelines, managing resources, and continuing to grow as a leader. Ultimately, his ambition is to become a project manager, contributing to the construction of innovative buildings and homes for future generations.

While his journey begins in San Antonio and the surrounding areas, Johnie is excited about the many opportunities that lie ahead. He credits much of his momentum to the support of scholarship donors. “Thank you again for supporting me,” he says. “Donors like you are the reason I can continue to grow and thrive.”
