Michele Tinoco leads with heart and honors her roots through education and service
Michele "1L" Tinoco is not just a student—she’s a storyteller, a community builder, and a role model. As a non-traditional, first-generation, multi-racial, LGBTQ+ woman, and Scholar, Michele’s return to college is more than an academic pursuit—it’s a tribute to her past and a bold step toward her future.
Born in Milwaukee and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Michele’s journey has taken many turns—from early years in Mexico navigating language barriers, to a move to Texas inspired by love, to deep personal loss with the passing of her father during the pandemic. “My dad always asked me, ‘When are you going back to school?’” Michele recalls. “After he passed away, I couldn’t stop hearing that question.” That loss, along with the end of a decade-long career, became a turning point.
"I’m here to make my mark and uplift others along the way. This is a tremendous support and vote of confidence”
Michele is the recipient of the Student Leadership Institute Scholarship, among several others. She is recognized for demonstrating exceptional leadership, service, and commitment to her campus and community. The scholarship honors those who go beyond academics to inspire others, create positive change, and embody the values of the Alamo Colleges District.
Today, Michele is pursuing her Associate Degree in Radio, Television, and Broadcasting at San Antonio College, with plans to expand into environmental science and sustainability. She's not just attending classes—she's building a presence. Michele is an active leader on campus, involved with SAC GSA (Gender and Sexuality Association), the Catholic Student Association, SAC CAB, and more.
Outside of school, Michele serves her community through faith, volunteerism, and mentoring her four godchildren. She’s even launched her own podcast—"La Charla with Michele '1L'"—inspired by the heartfelt conversations shared around her family’s kitchen table. “I want to create content that reflects honesty, warmth, and the kind of connection I craved growing up,” she shares.
She will begin her Bachelor’s degree at Palo Alto College this fall in Operations Management. She is planning for a future that uses media to amplify voices and foster understanding. “Alamo Colleges has given me a sense of belonging, purpose, and the space to grow," she says.
