What is the Sociology program?This program explores how the various elements of society – family, religion, education, the economy, medicine, law, politics, media, culture and more – shape our behavior and experience in life. What will I learn?You will explore how human beings are shaped by the societies in which we live and the forces that shape human interactions and behaviors. You’ll learn about topics including social institutions and structures, minority studies, social change, marriage and family, criminology, and drug use and abuse. You’ll learn about both qualitative and quantitative research methods, which allow you to recognize trends and patterns and produce social statistics such as those used in market research, opinion polling, sales, and countless other applications. You’ll also develop marketable skills in critical thinking, problem solving, written and oral communication and personal responsibility. |
What can I do with this course of study?This program will prepare you to continue your education in sociology by pursuing a bachelor’s degree (follow the Transfer Advising Guide to prepare to transfer to a university). Sociology majors enter a wide variety of careers including business, management, marketing, human resources, social science, research, community services, health services, higher education, law, publishing, social services, and teaching. What's special about the program?You’ll learn to go beyond your individual perspective to better understand our increasingly complex world. You’ll also learn to look beyond the surface of issues to discover the "why.” This program promotes global awareness and multicultural learning opportunities, such as courses with an emphasis on the Mexican-American experience. You’ll also have opportunities to engage in hands-on research that focuses on issues important to our campus and community. SAC also offers a Sociology student club and service-learning opportunities that encourage civic and community responsibility. |
