From Soldier to Scholar: Donavan Butler’s Commitment to Leadership and Growth

After a distinguished career in the U.S. Army and his subsequent medical retirement, Donavan Butler sought a new mission—one that would allow him to continue serving others through leadership, mentorship, and education. A first-generation college student, Donavan has called San Antonio home for nearly three decades and found his next purpose at Northeast Lakeview College, where he is pursuing an Associate of Science in General Science.

"I returned to college to be a servant leader in my community and to lead by example for my family—showing them the importance of seeking knowledge and continual self-improvement."

Donavan is the proud recipient of the Hall and Pat Hammond Endowed Scholarship, established to support students and help them succeed against all odds. He attributes much of his success to the many support resources available through the Alamo Colleges District, including the Advocacy Centers, Northeast Lakeview College's Student Life office, and, most importantly, the Veterans Center. Donavan emphasizes that academic grit and mental toughness have been essential to his progress. While financial challenges have been a constant, foundation scholarships have made a tremendous difference—allowing him to focus fully on being a strong and successful student.

An active campus leader, Donavan serves as President of the Student Veterans of America, Vice President of Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa, and a member of several organizations, including the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), the Men’s Excellence Network, and the Alamo Foundation Ambassadors. His dedication and leadership have earned him numerous honors, including the U.S. Department of State Gilman International Scholarship, the NSLS National Scholarship, and multiple academic distinctions such as the President’s and Dean’s Lists.

Looking ahead, Donavan plans to complete his associate degree and pursue a career within the Alamo Colleges District, where he hopes to empower future student leaders through coaching, training, and mentorship. His journey reflects resilience, purpose, and a continued commitment to service—qualities that define both his military and academic paths.
