Spotlight Series: Morgan Sanchez
July 30, 2026
For nearly 10 years, Morgan Sanchez has been one of the many friendly faces helping students feel connected, supported, and encouraged at Palo Alto College.
As a Student Success Coordinator in the Office of Student Life, Morgan wears a lot of hats. She manages social media for PAC Athletics, advises the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), coordinates volunteer opportunities for student-athletes, and helps create experiences that encourage students to get involved beyond the classroom.
"I wear so many hats," Morgan laughed. "But everything comes back to supporting our students."
Morgan's journey at Palo Alto College actually began as a student. A South Side native and McCollum High School graduate, she enrolled at PAC shortly after high school while working part-time as a lifeguard. After taking time away to raise her daughter, she returned as a swim instructor before eventually finding her home in Student Life.
This October, she'll celebrate 10 years as a full-time employee. A milestone that makes her story a true example of someone who has grown alongside the college.
While her daily responsibilities keep her busy, Morgan says the most rewarding part of her job has always been the relationships she's built with students.
"Being able to be a small part of their journey to becoming who they are," she said. "I pour a lot of myself into them. They're essentially like my kids."
That passion for mentoring students was evident throughout the conversation, especially as Morgan reflected on her upcoming transition to the college's new Aquatics Center. Although she's excited for what's ahead, she admits she'll miss seeing students every day.
"Mentoring them is what I'm going to miss the most," she shared. "Watching them grow into confident adults, that's been the best part."
One student who immediately came to mind was Sofia, a former work-study student whom Morgan encouraged to join NSLS and eventually serve as the organization's president.
After the challenges of rebuilding student engagement following the pandemic, Morgan watched Sofia help breathe new life into the organization.
"Seeing her go from someone who was very timid to becoming a confident leader was one of my proudest moments," Morgan said. "Watching her give her induction speech made me so proud."
It's those moments of growth that continue to motivate her every day.
"Just being able to leave an impression on them," she said. "To be a small chapter in their story. Sometimes you get to be the positive part of someone's day."
Through Student Life, students have access to leadership programs, volunteer opportunities, campus events, educational trips, and experiences that help them build friendships and connections that can last well beyond graduation.
"There's more than just academics on campus," Morgan said. "Even if you're taking classes online, there are opportunities to meet people, get involved, and network. You never know where those connections might lead."
Giving back is another lesson Morgan works hard to instill in students. Inspired by a volunteer experience at the San Antonio Food Bank with coworkers several years ago, she helped expand community service opportunities for student-athletes. Today, every student-athlete completes volunteer hours, and Morgan has seen firsthand how those experiences can change perspectives.
"Seeing students realize they can make a difference in someone else's life is pretty awesome," she said.
As Palo Alto College prepares to open its new Aquatics Center in early 2027, Morgan is looking forward to returning to where it all started.
A third-generation lifeguard who has been around the water since childhood, she'll soon be leading aquatic programming that serves not only PAC students but the entire South Side community.
"I look forward to teaching South Side youth and adults this life-saving skill," Morgan said. "I want people to see that water is a fun place to be and that it can be safe."
She hopes the new facility becomes more than just a pool. From swim lessons and wellness programs to community events and family activities, Morgan is excited about creating a welcoming space where people of all ages can learn, connect, and build confidence.
Although her role will soon look a little different, the heart of her work remains the same.
Whether she's encouraging a student to become a leader, helping student-athletes give back to the community, or teaching someone how to swim for the very first time, Morgan's goal has always been to help others believe in themselves.
For the Palo Alto College community, that's exactly what she has done for the past decade, creating opportunities, building confidence, and reminding students that someone is always in their corner.
