Job Shadow Day, an annual event in which SAC students spend half a day with  architecture and engineering professionals, was recognized as a finalist for the Bellwether Award, a national honor that focuses on trendsetting academic programs.

Bellwether Award web.jpgThe award is given by the Bellwether College Consortium, composed of colleges addressing critical issues faced by community colleges through research, workforce development, and instructional programs and services.

Each year, colleges from across the United States submit nominations for the Bellwether Award with only 30 becoming finalists. From these selected colleges, awards are given for one of three categories.

Since 2013, SAC students have participated in Job Shadow Day getting an up-close look at their future careers. They visit local architecture and engineering firms and have conversations with employees. Some students also visit construction job sites to see how ideas go from the drawing board to becoming new buildings.

Several of the architecture and engineering professionals that students meet were once SAC students themselves. Many of those former students first learned about their careers when they participated in Job Shadow Day.

Job Shadow Day has received support from the Alamo Colleges Foundation and  O’Connell Robertson, a leading architecture, engineering and interior design firm in San Antonio, which has helped organize the event since it began.
