Our Mission

The Centers serve as "one-stop centers" that meet community members where they are and provide academic and workforce training for student success.

About HETC

The Southside Center was the first Alamo Colleges off-site community education center of three (Southside, Westside, Eastside) that opened in the Spring of 1999 at the Harlandale Independent School District Parent Education Center. It was known as the Southside Community Education & Technology Center and years later evolved to the Harlandale Education & Training Center. The Centers were established to serve as links between the community and the Alamo Colleges and continues to do so, 22 years later, up to now. In 2003, the Centers were recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinator Board and were awarded the Star Award for the exceptional contributions toward the goals of the Higher Education Plan in Closing the Gaps by increasing the recruitment of low-income, educationally disadvantaged, and first-generation students by 2015. The mission of the Centers is to ensure the delivery of services in such a way that the southside community's needs are met in the most efficient and effective manner by creating collaborations with local school districts, churches, and community-based organizations. Centers are dedicated to the elimination of barriers that traditionally restrict access to college for students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. HETC is committed to helping students by providing preliminary college enrollment processing assistance and workforce training opportunities to prospective and/or former students who are interested in attending any of the Alamo Colleges. Since the inception of HETC, the center has served over 28,000 students. HETC serves as a “one-stop center” that meets community members where they are and provide academic and workforce training for student success.
