New Student Orientation (NSO) and Group Advising (GA)

What is New Student Orientation and why do I need to complete?

New Student Orientation (NSO) is mandatory for all First Time in College, Former Alamo College (out for 1 yr.), Former Dual Credit and Transfer students (outside of Alamo Colleges with less than 30 credit hours) planning to enroll at St. Philip's College (SPC). By completing this Canvas course, you will become more familiar with the college lingo, college resources, college policies/procedures, learn about payment and financial aid options, and group advising. 

Transient students do not need to complete New Student Orientation (NSO); however, your Admissions application must reflect that you are a transient student. Transfer students (outside of Alamo Colleges with 30 + hours), must have a transcript on file reflecting the hours. If you have completed all of the necessary enrollment steps (see enrollment checklist below), please email spc-advising@alamo.edu for the Advising drop in zoom.

All students must have a current/active admissions application submitted to participate in the Canvas course. If you need assistance with completing your Enrollment checklist, please contact an Enrollment Coach at SPC-AR@ALAMO.EDU prior to scheduling New Student Orientation (NSO).

NSO has moved remotely to a Canvas platform and is accessible via your student ACES portal within 1-2 business days upon successful completion of the Online Registration Form below. The preferred browser for the course is Google Chrome. Once your request is submitted, you will receive an auto-generated email to your (ACES) school email with steps to accept the course.

What is Group Advising and why do I need to complete?

Group Advising provides students with a small group and one-on-one advising assistance for registration. Students are provided information about their certification, degree, and/or transfer advising guide as well as provided guidance on selecting and registering for classes for the upcoming semester.

Students must complete all steps in the Enrollment Process & NSO to schedule a Group Advising session after completion of New Student Orientation. Failure to complete any or all parts or both the enrollment process or Canvas course in ACES will hinder your ability to register.

Steps in the Enrollment Process include:

  • Complying with the bacterial meningitis law
  • Completing the Go FAARR and Test Prep Modules
  • Taking the TSI Placement Exam or providing qualifying exemption scores
  • Complete Refresher courses (if applicable)
