Black History Month Kickoff
Come and celebrate the kickoff of Black History Month with black-owned businesses and community organizations in the SAC Mall. The first 100 participants will receive a free lunch from black-owned and operated Mission Kitchen.

A Journey Through Sound with San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson
San Antonio’s Poet Laureate, Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, will take participants through an immersive experience of African American contributions to various musical genres through the vessel of spoken word poetry and music.

Our Bodies, Our Voice: Alvin Ailey’s Legacy in Concert Dance Presented by Tanesha Payne & Rhea Patterson
Alvin Ailey made an immeasurable impact on the world of dance. By weaving African American themes into his dances, he ushered in a new era of concert dance. Tanesha Payne and Rhea Patterson will take you on a journey through the black experience in American modern dance, the history of Alvin Ailey, and an exploration of race in dance.

Expressions of Identity: African American Portraits Exhibit and Presentation by Kaldric Dow
Local artist Kaldric Dow will have his work on display on the 4th floor of Moody in the library beginning February 5th through the end of Black History Month. His work will be a mixture of his portrait series from collage to charcoal drawings to fabric pieces. The exhibit will also feature pieces from his well-regarded Black on Black series. On February 15th, Kaldric Dow will give a presentation on his work in the exhibit space. Food will be provided from local, black-owned Tank’s Pizza.

Soulful Movement Workshop Taught by Tanesha Payne
Tanesha Payne is movement artist based in San Antonio, TX. She performs, choreographs, educates, and advocates for all things dance. She holds a BFA in Dance Studies from Texas State University and an MFA in Choreography from Jacksonville University. Join Payne, hosted by the SAC Dance program, for a soulful movement workshop that celebrates the contribution of Black artists to the world of dance.

Open Mic Night featuring guest artist Jeniecia Bethea
Join the Office of Student Life for a special evening of open mic night! The theme for the evening will be African Americans and the Arts and feature a performance from Jeniecia Bethea. Refreshments will be provided for attendees.

The Impact of Hip-Hop on Behavior and Culture Presented by Welcome 2 Reality
Over two dynamic presentations, Welcome 2 Reality lead participants into the fascinating realm of hip-hop and explore its profound influence on behavior and culture. From its humble origins in the Bronx to its global domination, hip-hop has captivated hearts and minds, shaping the way we think, act, and express ourselves. Through an engaging presentation and expert insights, these presentations will dissect the multifaceted impact of hip-hop, from empowering marginalized communities to redefining societal norms. Whether you’re a hip-hop enthusiast, a cultural observer, or simply curious about the genre’s transformative power, these presentations will leave you with a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between hip-hop and behavior. Participants are welcome to attend one or both of the sessions.
