Dean for Student Success
Julie serves as the Dean for Student Success at Northeast Lakeview College. She began her career in higher education 21 years ago as a graduate assistant at the University of North Texas responsible for the coordination of Supplementation Instruction designed for developmental math courses. While earning her Master’s in Education with a College Counseling concentration, she interned as an Academic Counselor in the College of Arts and Sciences focused on the success of undecided, non-traditional, and academically at-risk students. Once hired full time as an Academic Counselor, she continued her work with that population and developed the Motivating Toward Success workshop targeting freshmen whose CGPA fell below academic good standing and was able to increase the percentage of students returning to good standing by 13%.
She coordinated the creation of the Advising Guidebook, which is an advising resource for students and used as part of Freshman Orientation. The Advising Guidebook has been adopted from other campuses state and nationwide and now is in its 12th year at the University of North Texas.
During her tenure in the College of Arts and Sciences, she was given the opportunity to teach and coordinate the Career Development course for the university which resulted in 75% of undecided students deciding a major and graduating with that chosen major. She also has experience in teaching developmental math and developed the curriculum for a leadership class and Peace Corps Prep certificate.
As Assistant Dean in Undergraduate Studies, she led a team of Academic Counselors in providing advising and programming to the 2000 undecided, major-changers, pre-engineering, pre-music, and completer students. She developed 22 Learning Communities comprised of nine hours with a major focus and assigned peer mentors which yielded 98% enrollment.
As part of the leadership team in the College of Arts and Science, she was responsible for the retention and completion of 10,000 students in 13 departments. There she continued to provide Learning Communities, developed a cross-college advising communication and program plan, and supervised the math and science advising team. She created the strategic plan for advising for the College of Arts and Sciences and was able to increase student retention from 78.6 % to 80.1% for the CAS freshman and assisted in increasing retention university-wide to 78%.
She ended her tenure at the University of North Texas as the Senior Assistant Dean in the College of Science and assisted the creation of a brand new advising office and led the advising team and faculty to create and improve services both in and out of the classroom.
In her first year at Northeast Lakeview College, she had the privilege of working with the High School Programs and Recruitment team where she assisted with New Student Orientation, Judson Early College Academy, Graduation, Student Convocation, Student Success Summit, Data Summit, and Emerging Leaders.
Julie lives in New Braunfels with her husband, Michael, and daughters, Arden (14) and Marlee (11), and their dog, Ginger.
