One of a Kind Underwater Robotics Camp

Northeast Lakeview College is excited to announce that it is the only one of the Alamo Colleges to host The Project Challenge 2016 Summer Program that featured the new, innovative experience of building underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV).

The Project Challenge 2016 Summer Program is made possible through a grant from Texas Workforce Commission in partnership with the Alamo Colleges – Northeast Lakeview College and area school districts. These camps will provide 40 hours of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) focused experiences that will include building an underwater robot using the U.S. Navy’s unique SeaPerch initiative, and also include workshops in effective communication and teambuilding. 

“ROV is the hottest and newest things in robotics,” says Katie Robinson, Community Education/Workforce Specialist at NLC. “We are delighted to bring this opportunity to the youth in our area.”

96 youth (ages 14-18) received a scholarship to participate in one of two week-long sessions at NLC. Like other robotics sessions, participants engage in an interactive, hands-on experience to design, build and program a robot, but unique to this kind of camp, they learn new technology (such as propulsion) to construct a vehicle that can be submerged and operate in an underwater setting. Participants submerge their underwater robotic vehicles and test their equipment on the final workshop day in preparation for the competition held at the Palo Alto College Natatorium on the final day of each camp session.

Northeast Lakeview College, officially established in January 2007, is the newest of the five Alamo Colleges.
