SAC’s New SMART Library Lab Brings the Human Body to Life

San Antonio College is taking hands-on learning to the next level with the opening of the SMART Library Lab, made possible through a collaboration with Project BUILD. At the heart of this innovative space is the Anatomage table, an 84-inch interactive touchscreen workstation now available to students, faculty, and staff.

Located on the second floor, the Anatomage Table allows users to virtually examine the human body in stunning detail using advanced medical imaging of actual cadavers. With just a tap or swipe, layers of skin, muscle, and bone can be removed to reveal the body’s intricate systems. Users can rotate full-scale 3D images, make precise digital incisions, and explore the results from any angle – an experience that mirrors the tools and techniques used in some of the world’s leading medical schools.

The technology supports a wide range of learning opportunities, from studying blood flow animations and joint motions to exploring thousands of real medical cases. Unique features include the ability to view a virtual pregnancy, follow nerve pathways, observe heart motion, and even examine 3D models of cadaver prosections.

For those in the sciences beyond anatomy, the Science Table software offers more than 100+ virtual experiments in biology, chemistry, and physics – available exclusively on the table itself.

Reservations to use the table can be made through the SMART Library Lab’s online reservation system, giving the SAC community easy access to this powerful resource. Faculty are already finding creative ways to integrate it into coursework, and the table’s potential for enhancing research and lab instruction is drawing excitement across campus.
