What is the Respiratory Care Technology program?
The Respiratory Care Technology program is a sequenced learning experience offering classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences relevant to the practice of state-of-the-art respiratory care. Graduates of the program receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and are prepared for the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.

What I will learn?
You will learn content and clinical practice experiences that are designed to sequentially develop, apply, critically analyze, integrate, synthesize and evaluate concepts and theories in the performance of respiratory care procedures. Through structured, sequential, competency-based clinical assignments, concepts of team practice, patient-centered clinical practice, and professional development are discussed, examined, and evaluated.
What's special about the program?
Respiratory Care involves the assessment and therapeutic management of patients diagnosed with cardiopulmonary disease. Practitioners perform procedures involving the administration of oxygen and medical gases, humidity/aerosol therapy, varied breathing treatments, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, diagnostic lung function testing, and patient/family education.

The Respiratory Care Technology program (program # 200423) is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). Contact information for CoARC is 264 Precision Blvd. Telford, TN 37690 or by phone at (817) 283-2835. Information is also available online at www.coarc.com.
CoARC accredits respiratory therapy education programs in the United States. To achieve this end, it utilizes an ‘outcomes based’ process. Programmatic outcomes are performance indicators that reflect the extent to which the educational goals of the program are achieved and by which program effectiveness is documented.
Certification and Licensure:
Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the board examinations provided by The National Board for Respiratory Care. At least a Certified Registered Therapist (CRT) credential is required before applying for the state license through the Texas Medical Board. A state license is required to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the state of Texas.
Note: Certification and licensure are separate mechanisms.
In addition to the national CRT & RRT credentials, there is credentialing at the state level through the Texas Medical Board. Practitioners must apply for the state credential of a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP). Please contact the Texas Medical Board by phone at (512) 305-7010 for more information.
Students applying to the Respiratory Care Technology Program must meet all admission requirements for acceptance into St. Philip's College and the Health Sciences Division. These requirements include the following:

All students must complete the following academic prerequisite courses with a GPA of 2.8 or higher:
RSPT 1101 Introduction to Respiratory Care
ENGL 1301 Composition I
MATH 1314 College Algebra
BIOL 2404 Human Anatomy & Physiology
Those students desiring to continue their education in a university-based Respiratory Care Program (B.S.) should enroll in BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402 in lieu of the BIOL 2404 requirement for St. Philip's College.

Respiratory Program Application Process
Applications for the Respiratory Care Technology Program are accepted from March 1 - June 1. Cohorts begin each Fall. Dates are subject to change with extensions to deadlines.
Those students submitting a complete application on or before June 1st may be given priority for acceptance. Students submitting an application on or before the deadline date but requiring additional semester(s) (Spring/Summer) to complete the prerequisite course(s) cannot be guaranteed acceptance if enrollment capacity is met prior to completion of their prerequisite course(s). Notification of status given by July 7th.

Prospective students submitting an application to the Respiratory Care Technology Program will be selected based on certain criteria.
