Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is this the same as New Student Orientation?

No. New Student Orientation (NSO) is designed to help you get set up for classes—learning about key college resources, tutoring, policies and procedures, financial aid and payment options, and group advising so you can register with confidence. Tiger Nation Family Day, on the other hand, is about connection, celebration, and support. It’s where you’ll meet your campus community, explore the spaces you’ll use throughout your first year, and introduce your family to your new school if they haven’t visited yet. It’s the moment you shift from “I got accepted” to “I belong here.”

Is there a cost to attend?

No, it’s completely free. Dinner is provided, along with giveaways, and opportunities to connect with faculty, staff, and fellow students.

What should I expect during the event?

The day includes:

  • A Convocation Ceremony with the college president and special speakers
  • Tours of campus and key resources
  • Information Sessions about financial wellness, academic success, and student support services
  • A Dinner and Expo where you can meet programs, organizations, and campus partners
Can I make changes to my class schedule at Tiger Nation Family Day?

Schedule changes are not available during this event. Our Academic Advising team offers extended hours right before each semester to help students make any last-minute updates. You can find advising hours and support here on the Advising webpage: https://www.alamo.edu/spc/academics/academic-resources/academic-advising/

Do families need to register?

ADA service dogs and emotional support animals (ESAs)

ADA Service Dogs:

- Service dogs are specifically trained to perform tasks for individuals with disabilities. This can include guiding people who are visually impaired, alerting individuals who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, or helping those with psychiatric conditions by preventing anxiety attacks, for example.

- Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), only dogs (and in some cases, miniature horses) can be recognized as service animals. They must be trained to perform specific tasks directly related to the handler's disability.

- Service dogs have the right to accompany their handlers in all public places, including restaurants, stores, and transportation.

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs):

- ESAs provide comfort and emotional support to their owners but are not trained to perform specific tasks related to a disability. Their primary role is to alleviate symptoms of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

- Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not covered by the ADA and do not have the same public access rights. They may be allowed in some housing situations under the Fair Housing Act, and airlines used to allow them, though policies have increasingly changed.

- ESAs can be various types of animals, not just dogs.
