St. Philip's Theatre presents: Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress and directed by Vincent Hardy.

Trouble in Mind concerns a white director of a primarily Black play telling the actors the appropriate way to behave as Black characters. One of the actors objects. Tension arises because some of the cast is concerned about their jobs and believe they should capitulate to the director's requirements.

Art imitates life because Childress' play was scheduled for a Broadway production in 1957. She, not Lorraine Hansberry, would have been the first Black Female playwright on Broadway had she gone along with changes the producers wanted her to make in her script. She refused.

Her play was produced by the Roundabout Theater in 2021. We are bringing this production to San Antonio, featuring local actors, to celebrate another great, principled woman, the first President of St. Philip's College, Artemisia Bowden, in this 125th year of this institution's existence.
