SPC Observes Patriot Day
September 11, 2025

On Sept. 11, 2025, St. Philip’s College held a Patriot Day ceremony to honor the victims and first responders of 9/11, reflecting on the nation’s resilience and unity in the years since.
The program began with a bagpipe rendition of “The Bells of Dunblane” and the posting of colors by Sam Houston High School’s Junior ROTC before attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Interim Vice President for Student Success Andres C. Arredondo opened the ceremony, noting that Congress designated Sept. 11 as Patriot Day in 2001, calling it a “National Day of Service and Remembrance.”
“It is our goal to host an event that educates and motivates our students to be caring citizens, grateful for the sacrifices made by those who have come before us,” Interim Vice President Arredondo said.
St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston delivered remarks, recounting the loss of 2,977 lives during the attacks and honoring the bravery of firefighters, police, medics, military service members, and civilians who responded.
“Today, we remember those who perished and honor the brave men and women who rushed toward danger to render aid to those in need,” Dr. Loston said. “We shall never forget.”
Pastor Allison Joubert of Greater Ball Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Church led the closing prayer. The ceremony concluded with a bagpipe performance of “Amazing Grace” before guests were invited to share refreshments and gather for a photograph.
Events were held simultaneously at St. Philip’s main MLK campus and streamed live to its Southwest campus.
