St. Philip’s College history professor Allen Hamilton has received national recognition for his scholarship, earning the 2025 Six-Shooter Award for Best Journal Article of the Year from the Wild West History Association.

Hamilton received the award in July 2026 during the Wild West History Association’s Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The association is one of the largest historical organizations in the country.

The award recognized Hamilton’s article, “Sherman Faces Death among the Indians,” published in the March 2025 issue of the Wild West Historical Association Journal.

“I was surprised and didn’t know I was in the running,” Hamilton said. “It is my 28th published article. It’s a recognition for me and the college. Dr. Loston creates an atmosphere where we can pursue academic excellence.”

Hamilton has taught Texas and U.S. history at St. Philip’s College for 36 years. He is the college’s only faculty member who teaches Texas history and typically teaches three or four sections each semester.

His career includes extensive scholarship and recognition. Hamilton is the author of five books and 28 published articles. In 2019, the Texas State Historical Association honored him with the Bryan Award for Outstanding College Texas History Teacher in the State of Texas.

Hamilton also recently received his fifth NISOD Excellence Award, recognizing his contributions as a faculty member. Throughout his 36-year career at St. Philip’s College, Hamilton has combined teaching and scholarship to advance the study of Texas and U.S. history. His latest national recognition brings distinction to both his academic work and St. Philip’s College’s longstanding commitment to academic excellence.
