SPC Hosts 18th Annual Red Dress Luncheon

St. Philip’s College (SPC) hosted its 18th Annual Red Dress Luncheon on Feb. 11, bringing together students, employees, community leaders, and elected officials to promote heart health awareness during American Heart Month.
The event, themed “The Beat Goes On,” highlighted the importance of prevention, education, and community engagement in reducing heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, approximately one in five deaths, with someone dying from cardiovascular disease every 33 seconds, underscoring the need for continued awareness and lifestyle changes.
Doors opened at 11:30 a.m. for the luncheon, followed by an auction that raised over $1,000. Opening reflections were delivered by Dr. Tomeka Cross Wilson, Academic Program Director for Title III, followed by a welcome from St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston.
Gabriella “Natalia” Villamil, a nursing student, delivered the invocation before lunch was served. Student leaders then presented information about the history of the Red Dress initiative and the symbolism of the red rose, emphasizing the event’s longstanding role in raising awareness about cardiovascular health.
During her remarks, Dr. Loston emphasized the college’s commitment to supporting student and community wellness and how the college continually works to address health disparities that disproportionately affect underrepresented populations.
“Events like today’s luncheon allow us to educate, empower, and support our community,” Dr. Loston said.
Angelica Cordero, Student Government Association President, introduced the keynote speaker, the Honorable Judge Yolanda Huff of Bexar County Court 12 and the county’s Mental Health Court. Judge Huff discussed the importance of mental wellness and encouraged attendees to prioritize preventive health care.
The program included acknowledgements and closing remarks from Dr. Malikah Pitts Harvey, Vice President for Student Success, who thanked Student Life, the planning committee, faculty supporters, and student leaders for their role in organizing the event.
