Music Business
What is the Music Business program?The music business program is the only one of its kind in San Antonio. It’s where students learn about the business of music while using the latest industry-standard practices. The program focuses on understanding studio and live event sound, including multitrack mixdown recording application; and the business side of music with copyright law and music publishing. Students learn the elements of the music industry through real-world, hands-on experiences. What will I learn?As with any industry based on technology, the music business has undergone tremendous changes over the last couple of decades. More recently, as music consumption has been transformed by streaming, and with more affordable digital equipment and applications available, the lines that separate musicians from production and label management have become harder to recognize. The emerging models make it more important than ever that a combination of technology and entrepreneurial awareness is key to continued success. In addition to the Music Business associate degree, the program also offers two certificates: Music Business Administration, an 18-hour program to develop business management and music promotion skills, and Music Business Technology, a 17-hour program to learn technical skills in music production. |
What can I do with this course of study?This program is a pathway to professions within the music industry, with employers such as concert venues, touring companies, talent management companies, recording studios, music festivals, sound design and engineering, and media outlets that provide live musical performances. Career opportunities include artist management, venue management, booking, promoting, and professional audio production. What's special about our program?Graduates of the music business program are employed by concert venues, touring companies, talent management companies, recording studios, music festivals, and other media outlets. Some have turned their new skills toward managing music and entertainment talent. Students have real concert promotion opportunities with Fredstock, our annual music festival.
