Program Overview

History

  • Gilliam “Mike” Burton coordinated SAC’s Presidential Honors Program (1989–2011). More info.
  • The program was later renamed the Raul S. Murguia Presidential Honors Program.
  • In 2011 it became the Honors Academy Program under Dr. Jon Lee (through 2016). Dean Lee still mentors the Program.
  • Coordinators included Dehlia Wallis (2016–2018) and
    co-coordinators Wallis & Dr. Erik Anderson (2018–2019).
  • Laurie Lopez Coleman serves as the Director between 2019-2025.
  • Dr. Kim Wells is the Interim Director as of January 2026 after serving as the Events Committee chair for three years and Honors Faculty for four.

Recognitions & Awards

2020 Examples of Excelencia — Finalist

The San Antonio College Honors Academy was selected as a finalist for the 2020 Examples of Excelencia award, an honor bestowed by Excelencia in Education, which highlights efforts that accelerate student success in higher education at HSIs.

How Finalists are selected

  • Programs are nominated through a national call for submissions.
  • Profiles are reviewed and finalists are identified using stated criteria.
  • Finalists are presented to a national selection committee of higher education leaders and stakeholders.
  • The committee selects Examples of Excelencia based on the strength of high-impact practices tailored to Latino students and communities.
