SACMEN Nominated for Volunteer of the Year Honor

The San Antonio College Men Empowerment Network (SACMEN) was recently recognized for its work in helping men of color succeed in higher education. SACMEN received a nomination at the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County's 29 th  Annual Volunteer of the Year Awards.

Each year, the United Way awards highlight individuals or groups that have made a significant impact on the community. Awards are presented in eight different categories. SACMEN was nominated in the education category.

The nomination came as a complete surprise said Mona Aldana-Ramirez, director of Student Success at SAC. "We don't seek the accolades, but it is nice to be recognized for the work we are doing," she said.

Aldana-Ramirez added that she believes SACMEN was nominated for its work in improving outcomes for boys and men of color.

"Our work provides opportunities for boys to see role models in our male college students and connect through leadership, mentoring activities and other events.  We collaborate with Communities in Schools and MBKSA to leverage our resources and provide better opportunities for boys and men of color," she explained.

Ultimately, another organization won the top honor at the awards presentation held at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. However, the SACMEN team was pleased to be recognized for their work and have already begun planning events for the 2018-19 school year. The program will hold a reception for new students during the Weeks of Welcome in August, host the Envision Men's Conference at SAC in October, and attend the Texas Male Student Leadership Summit at the University of Texas in Austin.
