St. Philip's College Partners with U.S. Air Force to Launch Accelerated Physical Therapist Assistant Degree Program for Airmen

St. Philip's College is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural accelerated Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Associate of Applied Science degree program, welcoming a cohort of 12 United States Air Force Physical Medicine apprentices. This innovative partnership, developed in collaboration with the Department of War and the Air Force Medical Readiness Agency (AFMRA), commenced on August 10, 2026, to enhance military healthcare readiness and expand educational opportunities for Air Force personnel.

The accelerated program is specifically designed for Airmen in the Air Force Physical Medicine enlisted career field (AFSC 4J0X2) and enables them to complete Phase II of their PTA education through the CAPTE-accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Program at St. Philip's College. Upon successful completion, expected by February 2027, participants will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and gain eligibility to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination for PTA licensure.

"We are proud to collaborate with the Department of War and the U.S. Air Force to assist these Airmen in obtaining an accredited degree and licensure eligibility in a vital allied health profession."

Building on the specialized training received at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, the program incorporates curriculum alignment and credit transfer agreements. This allows participants to receive academic credit for their prior military training while completing the remaining academic, laboratory, and clinical requirements within a streamlined seven-month cohort model at St. Philip's College.

The initiative addresses a pressing need identified by the Department of War: enlisted Physical Medicine personnel require accredited academic credentials to obtain PTA licensure. Through this partnership, Airmen will have access to classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory experiences, clinical placements, academic support, educational technology resources, and guidance for licensure preparation.

Students are expected to finish their coursework, laboratory, and clinical experiences by February 26, 2027. Graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant, enabling them to significantly enhance rehabilitation services within military treatment facilities and operational environments worldwide.
