St. Philip’s College (SPC) partnered with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) to host the TMCF Workforce Development Place-Based Training Summit on April 28-29, providing more than 300 students with hands-on career readiness experiences and direct connections to employers.

The two-day event, held at the college’s Martin Luther King Campus, marked a significant milestone. SPC was one of only three institutions nationwide selected to pilot the program, making it the first time TMCF brought its workforce development summit model to college campuses.

The training focused on equipping students with practical skills needed to succeed in today’s workforce through interactive workshops, professional development sessions, career exploration activities, and networking opportunities.

Students participated in professional headshot sessions, résumé and LinkedIn profile development workshops, strengths-based career exploration activities, and networking exercises designed to enhance their professional presence. The summit also featured sessions on financial literacy, workplace resilience, career readiness, artificial intelligence in job searching, professional introductions, and problem-solving skills.

Employers and organizations participating in the summit included TekSystems, Truist, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, AT&T, Methodist Healthcare, Southwest Research Institute, Morgan’s Wonderland, Tesla, the City of San Antonio, Launch SA, and Methodist Health.

In addition to workforce development programming, the summit provided significant student support through scholarships and giveaways. Seven students received scholarships totaling up to $1,500, for a total of more than $8,500 in financial assistance. Students also had opportunities to win laptops, iPads, and gift cards throughout the event.

The summit concluded with a partner reception that brought together college leadership, faculty, staff, employer partners, and TMCF representatives to celebrate the initiative's impact and strengthen future collaborations.
