Student Enrichment Center Provides Essential Services to SAC Students

San Antonio College has a new center to help students with resources needed outside the classroom. The Student Enrichment Center has been created to help students with Career Services, Experiential Learning, and the First-Year Experience.

“We are focused on providing students with the best experiences to help them reach their personal and professional goals,” said Sabrina Macal-Polasek, team leader for the Student Enrichment Center. “Our hope is to provide an environment that delivers resources and support that students need.”

The Student Enrichment Center is now home to Career Services, previously part of the Transfer and Career Center, also known as TRAC. The Enrichment Center offers career appointments, workshops, and career resources. Students can learn job interviewing skills, receive help in writing a resume, or attend career fairs with local companies held in the fall and spring semesters.

The center can also help with experiential learning, giving students a grasp of how skills learned in a classroom can be used in a career field. Experiential learning includes internships, practicums, and job shadowing. It also contains service learning or community service components, such as working at a food pantry or volunteering at Habitat for Humanity. Co-curricular learning and extra-curricular activities can also be part of experiential learning.

And the center helps new students acclimate to college life with the First-Year Experience (FYE). This includes My SAC Journey, a website that provides new students a series of goals to teach them the skillsets they need to be successful in college. My SAC Journey also provides resources to help new students as they begin their college career. FYE also provides specific events and resources to first-generation in college students. In addition, FYE organizes workshops to help students navigate their way through academic life.

Macal-Polasek wants students to know the Student Enrichment Center is there for them.  “If students feel lost or don’t know where to find the resources they need, reach out to us and we can assist,” she said. “We want to help them navigate campus and thrive here and beyond.”
