What is the Medical Laboratory Technician program?

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program prepares Health Science professionals to perform analysis on blood and body fluids to enable a physician to diagnose and monitor the treatment of diseases. The MLT program helps students obtain marketable skills for entry-level positions. Graduates earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The program satisfies entry-level skill requirements and provides a foundation for career advancement.

What's special about the program?

Medical Laboratory Technicians perform routine medical laboratory tests on tissue, blood, and other body fluids to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating diseases. The Medical Laboratory Technician program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).

The Medical Laboratory Technician Program leads to an Associate's of Applied Science Degree. The curriculum includes courses in clinical hematology, immunology, immunohematology, clinical microbiology, clinical chemistry, phlebotomy, and urinalysis. Clinical experiences are provided in area hospitals and clinics.

Certification:

After completing the required academic and medical laboratory technician courses, you will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and will then be eligible for the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) national certification examination administered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). https://www.ascp.org/content/my-role/lab-professional 

At this time, the state of Texas does not require any type of licensing examination for medical laboratory technicians; however, completion of this program will allow you to take the licensing examinations in other states.

Admissions and Prerequisite Requirements

Admissions Requirements:

It is required that all Medical Laboratory Program applicants follow the procedures below.  Any interested student must first apply for admission to the college and have completed the two prerequisite courses and then they may apply for admission into the program.

Prerequisite Requirements:

All prerequisites must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher.

These courses are:

  • BIOL 2404 – Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • MATH 1314 – College Algebra

Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete all general education course requirements prior to the start of the program.

Application and Selection Process

Application Process:

The application deadline for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technician Program (MLAB) is May 31, 2023. It is recommended students submit a complete application packet once prerequisites have been completed for consideration before the start of the Fall semester class. If a student is completing a prerequisite during the Spring or Summer session, an updated official transcript must be submitted to the program.

Applications are reviewed and processed for consideration for the fall semester cohort. Failure to complete and submit all requested paperwork on/or before May 31, 2023, will not be considered for the upcoming fall cohort. The program accepts 20 students annually.

After careful review of all applicants by the program director and faculty, applicants will be notified of their acceptance (conditional) or nonacceptance into the program via email.
