SPC Receives Family Heirloom Donation

A handmade quilt dating to around 1900 will soon greet visitors in the lobby of St. Philip's College's newly renovated Learning and Leadership Development Center, serving as a lasting tribute to community.

The quilt was donated by Phillip Bakke, president of Bakke Development Corp. and a member of the Alamo Colleges Foundation Board. The heirloom belonged to his great-grandmother, Stella Alsup Peacock, and has remained in the Bakke family for generations.

Created around the turn of the 20th century, the quilt reflects the artistry of early American quilt makers. During that era, quilts often featured bold geometric patterns assembled from scraps of calico, gingham and other available fabrics, transforming everyday materials into functional works of art.

The donation adds to the college's art collection to celebrate history, culture and community partners whose generosity helps enrich the campus.

Community members will have an opportunity to view the quilt during St. Philip's College's Legacy Day event on Aug. 18. The event will provide faculty, staff, students and community members with the opportunity to see the historic heirloom while celebrating the college's heritage and traditions.
