About Ryan Kirby

My name is Ryan Kirby and I have been teaching at Alamo for four years. I started year one at Northwest Vista, and since then I have been at NLC exclusively. After receiving my BA in English at Texas State, I went to Arizona State to complete my MA in English. Now, I am a doctoral candidate at UTSA, which means I am writing my dissertation to receive a PhD in English. As an English instructor, I am interested in helping students find ways to connect in-class writing to their profession. In my classes, we talk a lot about careers and what to do post-college. Transferring is important to me. If students want to transfer, I always try to help coordinate them with their advisor to set up a degree track.

Throughout my career, I have focused on the way student writing leads to optimal success outside of the college classroom. The approaches that I learned at ASU allow me to meet students in a more familiar place, so to speak. At ASU, I focused my studies on teaching and writing. In this way, I use my education to help students with theirs. I work very well with students who are unsure of or insecure in their writing. I truly believe that everybody has what it takes to produce clear and effective communication.

In my spare time, I collect and listen to records, read, and write. I also spend plenty of time with my spouse and our three dogs.
