SAN ANTONIO, TX (April 2, 2024) – Northwest Vista College (NVC) and the Alamo Colleges District will host an unforgettable celestial event of the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8 from 11 am to 3 pm. The event, which is sponsored by Boeing, includes a garden of telescopes, scientists, college professors, college students, elementary and middle schools, food trucks, music, other entertainment, and the Scobee Education Center and Planetarium.

“We are delighted to host the San Antonio community and visitors to Northwest Vista College for this once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse viewing opportunity, and our faculty and scientists are thrilled to share their knowledge of this scientific experience with students and the public,” said Northwest Vista College President Dr. Amy Bosley.

This free event will be held in Parking Lot No. 6, overlooking the picturesque Cedar Elm STEM Center, Northwest Vista College’s newest building. College professors and scientists from both Northwest Visa College and the Scobee Education Center and Planetarium at San Antonio College, will provide expert information and guide the solar viewing for the community. The Scobee Education Center will provide 10,000 approved solar glasses. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and hats.

This is the first time in over 600 years that San Antonio residents will experience a total solar eclipse. According to NASA, the path of totality – where viewers can see the Moon block the Sun, revealing the star’s outer atmosphere, called the corona – is much wider with this year’s solar eclipse than it was during the eclipse in 2017. The next total solar eclipse viewable in the contiguous United States will be on Aug. 23, 2044.
