Commencement Information:

As of Friday, March 27th, Northwest Vista College’s 2019-2020 Commencement Ceremony has been postponed until December 2020 due to the COVID-19 coronavirus Updates regarding commencement date and additional information will be posted to the website and sent to students' alamo.edu emails. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Students who complete their degree requirements in Fall 2019, Spring 2020 or Summer 2020 (lacking only 8 credit hours or less) must meet with their assigned academic advisor for a degree review by the deadline.

    Update Your Home Address

    If you changed your address after meeting with your advisor regarding graduation, send your new address to NVC-Graduation@alamo.edu. The deadline for Spring is June 1.

    What Does It Cost?

    There is no cost for graduation. The diploma, cap, and gown are provided by the Alamo Colleges District. Also, remember that you do not have to participate in the ceremony in order to receive your diploma. However, you still need to apply for graduation as you approach the completion of a program.

    Who Can I Invite?

    Please invite all who have supported you through your educational journey. There are no restrictions for the number of guests that you may invite to celebrate your accomplishment.

    Diplomas

    When and how will I get my diploma?

    • Diplomas are mailed approximately 60 days after the end of the term in which you applied via first-class mail in a 12" X 16" cardboard mailer.
    • Diplomas are mailed to the address provided by you on the Application for Graduation. It is recommended that all degree candidates log into ACES before the end of the semester and verify that the diploma address is correct. If incorrect, update it under the Personal Information menu.
    • Diplomas will not be mailed to students with Holds.
    • Please log into ACES to verify that no holds exist on your account.

     

    What's on my diploma?

    • Diplomas include the following information: Student’s name (first, middle, and last), degree and major. University honors and Honors College tiers are included for qualifying students.
    • Diplomas DO NOT include minors and or concentrations.

    If you still have not received your diploma, please e-mail the Degree Completion Team from your student ACES account with the following information: 

    1) Full Name, 2) Student Banner ID, & 3) Permanent Mailing Address to:

  • Welcome, and congratulations on your graduate's remarkable achievement of earning a college degree! Commencement is not only a major event in a graduate's life but also a celebration and acknowledgement of you—friends and family—who have provided guidance, care and support to the new graduate. We hope the information on this website will help you have the most enjoyable experience possible on this special day.

    Ceremony

    Doors will open approximately 2 hours before the ceremony. The ceremony will be held at the Alamodome.
    All names will be called. The ceremony should take approximately 2—2.5 hours
    After the ceremony, please exit the Alamodome to congratulate your graduate. No re-entry will be allowed.

    Tickets

    No ticket is required. There will be open seating for guests.

    Noisemakers, Balloons, Flowers and Refreshments

    No noisemakers, balloons, flowers, or outside refreshments will be allowed inside the Alamodome. Minimal concessions will be available.

    Use the New Braunfels Street exit, south on New Braunfels to Commerce Street, west on Commerce Street to Cherry Street, south on Cherry Street and into lots.

    Traffic

    Due to the high number of guests in attendance for the ceremony, heavy traffic congestion is anticipated in the Alamodome/Downtown areas. Families are strongly advised to arrive at least ONE (1) hour prior to the start of the ceremony. Additional parking options are available in private lots or downtown parking garages.     Northwest Vista College is not responsible for parking during this event. Please visit the Alamodome website to plan ahead for parking.

    General parking is available in Lots B and C at the Alamodome. The parking rate is set by the City of San Antonio and subject to change. Currently the parking rate is $20.00 parking fee per vehicle, including parking for graduates. Graduates are encouraged to park with their families and then walk to the student check-in area. No drop-offs!

    Handicapped Parking
    There are limited marked handicapped parking spaces in Lot A, at $15.00 per vehicle. Once allotted marked handicapped spaces have been filled, guests will still be able to park in Lot A at $15.00 per vehicle. Disabled guests may enter at the south entrance and plaza level of the Alamodome.

    Lot A Egress
    There is a new egress plan for families who have a disabled parking pass for Lot A at the Alamodome. After the ceremony is over, traffic exiting Lot A onto the IH-37 Frontage Road will be directed left toward westbound Cesar Chavez Boulevard or southbound IH-37. This new exit route will be in effect for approximately two hours following the ceremony.

    Security Procedures

    Alamodome Safety Procedures

    Safety procedures will be in place for upcoming Commencement ceremonies at the Alamodome. To ensure the safety of every guest, all persons, including graduates, will be subject to a bag check and a security scan.

    All bags will be searched by security officers before visitors are permitted to enter the venue. The Alamodome and UTSA encourage everyone to arrive early and travel light, as you may be subject to search upon entry, which includes metal-detecting hand wands.

    We strongly urge all attendees not to bring bags to any of the ceremonies unless they are absolutely necessary. Those visitors bringing bags should expect delays in order to enter the venue. Please plan accordingly. Do not bring any packages that cannot be opened or inspected. Items not permitted into the Alamodome must either be returned to your vehicle or be discarded. In order to expedite the process, please leave any unpermitted items in your vehicle. Staff may not store or hold items for you.

    Alamodome Clear Bag Policy

    To ensure the safety of every guest, all guests will be subject to a bag check and security scan. The Alamodome has implemented a Clear Bag Policy that limits the size and type of bags permitted for guests (pictured below). Visit Security Procedures for more information on the process.

    Posters, Banners, and Signs are Prohibited

    Strollers will be checked in by Alamodome security and returned after the ceremony.

Diploma Questions

Do I have to attend the graduation ceremony to receive my degree?

No, you do not have to attend the graduation ceremony to receive a degree but you do need to apply for graduation to have your degree reviewed so you can be awarded a degree.

When will I receive my diploma?

Eight to ten working weeks after the official close of the term in which you have graduated.

What if I want to purchase a duplicate diploma or re-print?

Students may request a re-print or duplicate diploma at the link below, the fee is $25.

Invited Guest Questions

Is there a fee to park at the Alamodome?

Yes, it will cost $15 per vehicle to park at the Alamodome.

My family member is hearing impaired. Will an interpreter or any other accommodations be provided?

A reserved seating section for hearing impaired guests requiring sign language interpreting services will be available near the southwest corner of the stage.

Where can accessible restrooms be found during the ceremony?

All Alamodome restrooms are accessible for guests with disabilities. All restrooms are identified by signage with the handicap symbol.

Is there a limit to the number of guests I can invite?

Please invite all who have supported you through your educational journey.  There are no restrictions for the number of guests that you may invite to celebrate your accomplishment.

Do I need tickets for my guests and family to attend commencement?

No.

Is there a fee to attend the ceremony for me or my guests?

No.

Ceremony Questions

Is participation in the commencement ceremony required?

No, you do not have to participate in the commencement ceremony in order to receive your diploma.

However, you still need to meet with your Academic Advisor to complete mandatory graduation advising as you approach completion of a program. 

What is the difference between commencement and graduation?

Commencement refers to the ceremony, which is an opportunity for students to celebrate their academic accomplishments with their peers, family and friends. There is no cost for graduation. The diploma, cap and gown are provided by the Alamo Colleges District. Participation in commencement does not guarantee or indicate degree completion. 

Graduation is a process consisting of meeting with your certified academic advisor, applying for graduation on paper, updating your diploma name and address in ACES if necessary, along with completing all academic requirements.

Is there a rehearsal?

No, there is no rehearsal for commencement.

What time should I arrive for commencement?

You should arrive 2 hours prior to the ceremony in which you plan to attend.

Where do I park?

Parking is available at Alamodome.

Is there a commencement ceremony after every semester?

Northwest Vista College hosts one commencement ceremony in May every year for students who complete their degree in Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters. Students completing in the summer can attend the ceremony if they are lacking only 8 credit hours or less.

Can I participate in commencement if I have not completed all my requirements?

Only students who have applied for graduation are allowed to participate in commencement ceremonies.

Can I decorate my cap and gown?

Your cap and gown may be decorated in good taste.

Can I keep my cap and gown?

Your cap and gown is a keepsake for you to cherish, you will not need to return it.

Can a military student wear their dress uniform in lieu of the cap & gown?

Students in the military must also wear academic regalia. Uniforms may be worn underneath the regalia.

What do I wear and where do I get it?
  • All participants must wear academic regalia.
  • Caps, gowns and tassels are available during Grad Fest or at the Campus Bookstore.
  • Wear dark shoes, since dark accessories have a more favorable appearance with the formal academic wear.
  • The tassel is worn on the right side of the cap until the end of the commencement ceremony when graduates are instructed to shift the tassel to the left side.
  • It is recommended that you take your regalia out of the bag and place it on a hanger a few days before your ceremony in order to decrease the wrinkles.
I walked in the ceremony, does that mean I graduated?

No. Participation in a commencement ceremony does not imply or infer the awarding of a degree at the time of the commencement ceremony; a final degree audit must be completed before a degree is officially awarded.
