NVC Honors Recital Solos & Ensemble Dress Rehearsal
Dr. Minkyung Lee will conduct a master class of selected outstanding singers who will be working on their solos and ensembles for both NVC Honors Recital in Classical division and Solo Performances for Concert Choir. Advanced singers will participate in this Master Class to define their skills with enhancing stage manners for their upcoming showcases and audition preparation.Monday, November 21

FALL WORKSHOP
All-State Choir Audition Preparation with Dr. Lee
NVC Singers will learn how to successfully prepare and execute the Texas Two-Year College Choral Association Region V All-State Choir Audition with Dr. Lee. Selected singers participate in this Fall Workshop to learn the expectations as they audition, polish their audition pieces, and showcase their abilities for maximum results. NVC singers will prepare to compete with singers from the following schools: Del Mar College, Wharton County Junior College, Coastal Bend College, Laredo Junior College, Palo Alto College, and St. Phillips College, San Antonio College, and Victoria College. A guest conductor, Dr. Craig Jessop, from Utah State University will lead the TTCCDA All-State Choir during the TMEA annual convention held in San Antonio in February 2023.Monday, October 10

NVC Fall Music Fest is thrilled to invite dazzling lyric soprano Zoe Chunghui Kim and internationally recognized and awarded Korean-American pianist Joseph Choi. Versatile pianist Joseph Choi has been praised for his sensitive, sincere, and scintillating performances. A multifaceted artist, Joseph currently serves on the faculty at Concordia University and on the boards of Panoramic Voices and Pflugerville Arts Council. Joey received his degrees from the prestigious Juilliard School and the University of Texas at Austin under Jerome Lowenthal, Matti Raekallio, and Anton Nel. Soprano Zoe Chunghui Kim has been establishing her name in the operatic repertoire. She was awarded first place in the 2021 Forte International Competition, 2021 MAP International Music Competition, and the Distinction Award in the 2018 Metropolitan International Vocal Competition. She recently earned her doctoral degree in Opera Performance at UT Austin presenting her research on Puccini’s Edgar. During her Master’s study at Manhattan School of Music, she attended various training programs singing leading roles including Fiordiligi (Così fan Tutte), Mimi (La Bohème), and Countess (Le nozze di Figaro). After moving to Austin, she appeared on the stage of Butler Opera Center as Tatiana (Eugene Onegin), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), and Governess (The Turn of the Screw).
The two artists will collaborate on the program drawing inspiration from the Romantic era’s distinct vocal music composers, Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, Giuseppe Verdi, Georges Bizet, and more. Based on the famous quartet “Bella figlia dell’amore” from the opera’s final act, Liszt’s brilliant pianistic transcription, Paraphrase de concert sur Rigoletto, S. 434. will be performed by Dr. Joseph Choi to open the program. His exquisite interpretation of Franz Schubert’s Impromptu op. 90 no.2 and Carmen Variations by Vladimir Horowitz make this program more exciting. Soprano Zoe Chunghui Kim will perform dazzling art songs and opera arias, including Ave Maria by Schubert, “È strano… Sempre libera” from La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, and Micaela aria from Carmen by Georges Bizet. -

NVC Music department is excited to invite NVC Music Alumni Christian N. Cruz for the Guest Artist Series this fall. For the past two years, the world has felt an extreme range of emotions in regard to the ongoing pandemic. In this recital, Christian will take the audience on a musical journey through different musical genres that attach a similar and/or different emotion in each piece. By tapping into our stored emotions, we as artists can focus them into our art and create something beautiful for the world. Under the theme of “Emotion through Song,” Christian Cruz will give a lecture Recital with songs and opera arias by Georg Philipp Telemann, Georg Friederich Händel, Franz Schubert, George Hüe, Leonard Bernstein, and more.Christian N Cruz is a San Antonio native, music educator, conductor, and collaborative artist having taught in church, community, public, private, and charter school settings. As an educator and artist, Christian promotes collaboration from other art forms to compliment choral music with singers ranging from beginning to professional musicians. Christian specializes in sacred liturgical music, with an area of focus in effective teacher instruction and feedback in the choral rehearsal. Along with teaching and conducting, Christian is an active vocal artist having performed with The San Antonio Chamber Choir, The San Antonio Choral Society, San Antonio Symphony, Chorus Angelorum, Piping Rock Singers, Bach Society Houston and Sonido Barroco San Antonio. In 2013, Christian made his countertenor debut with the San Antonio Choral Society, in 2019 with Bach Society Houston, and in 2021 with Sonido Barroco San Antonio.

Northwest Vista’s exciting Concert Choir will sing with their all to reach deep into everyone’s hearts and reconnect our community. The Circle of Compassion binds us to one another to embrace and value humanism and diversity. Ever since the whole world was shaken by the Covid-19 pandemic and in the midst of recovering, the next challenge for our journey is to find a way to reconnect and extend the feeling of comfort, kindness, and compassion to stand alongside each other. It’s been difficult to recognize the beautiful smiles and understand the true meaning of everyone’s words through eyes alone. Despite the struggles, NVC Concert Choir invites everyone to uphold, encourage, and support our beautiful community through many musical jewels including Good Job, Better Days, Trust in You, We are warriors, and A Choral Medley from the famous musical Kinky Boots that deliver a powerful message of acceptance under Dr. Lee’s baton. -

Dr. Minkyung Lee is excited to host the NVC honors recital for selected students because they have gone above and beyond in their studies for this special recital showcase. NVC Jazz vocalists, Hannah Botello and Sabrina Cioffi, will open this program with powerful line ups of colorful jazz repertoires. Additional outstanding singers will share the stage to perform famous musical theatre solos and ensembles. This group of soloists and ensemble singers will feature the most thrilling, ever-popular musical theatre repertoires.

"Teaching and Performing Journey after NVC Music" by Christian Cruz

Palmetto Recital Hall (PCA 107)NVC Music Alumni Christian Cruz will return to Northwest Vista College to share his musical journey as an educator and performer. Christian holds an associate of arts degree from Northwest Vista College, a Bachelor of Music degree in Choral Music Education from Sam Houston State University, and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Texas State University. Christian is now based in San Antonio, Texas directing choirs and performing in solo and ensemble concerts around the area.
NVC Music Alumni Christian N. Cruz was a graduate assistant of Choral Activities under Dr. Craig Hella Johnson and Dr. Jonathan Babcock from Texas State University. Christian will briefly explore his musical journey from grade school to Northwest Vista College, all the way to the present-day. By following Christian’s musical journey during his time at Northwest Vista College, current Northwest Vista College students can catch a glimpse of the many musical/artistic opportunities that are available to them in that career. After the talk, Christian will open up the floor to students with questions regarding music/artist careers outside/during/after college.
