I graduated in May 2012 with an Associate of Arts in Business Administration. When I first got to NVC, my plan was to do something related to business that could support my upward progression at H-E-B (where I had been since high school), but in my first accounting class, the professor, Sally First, pulled me aside one day after class and changed my entire career trajectory.

“You know, you show up to my 8 a.m. class half asleep from working the night before, but you have one of the highest grades in the class. You really need to consider accounting as a career!”

Prior to that conversation, I had no idea what opportunities accounting could provide and just assumed it meant you worked for the IRS. Professor First recommended me for a program offered by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and made me promise I would at least try intermediate accounting before deciding on a different major. That was back in 2011. Fast forward 15 years, and I have had a wonderful career, earning my CPA in 2016 and working for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for nine years before starting my current role in data analytics at PowerGrid Services.

Later this year, I will also be starting my term as president of the San Antonio Chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs. My career in accounting has taken me places I never imagined, and all of this was possible because of a professor at NVC who took the time to sit down and talk to me about my plans for the future.
