Jesse Maldonado is a first-generation Mexican American, a combat veteran, and father. For Maldonado education means more than just a degree, it’s about building a better future for his family and setting an example for his kids. He said NVC has helped him grow and stay focused on that goal.

Q: Describe a moment when a piece of data, a grade, or feedback completely changed your direction?

A: One moment that changed my direction was getting feedback on an early assignment where I realized I wasn’t fully developing my ideas. I thought I was doing enough, but that feedback showed me I could do more. From that point on, I stopped aiming just to pass and started focusing on actually improving. It changed how I approach all my work now.

Q: Beyond the degree itself, what is the 'invisible' skill you developed at NVC that you believe will be your greatest asset in the workforce or at your next university?

A: The biggest invisible skill I developed at NVC is discipline with purpose. I learned how to stay consistent, manage my time, and keep going even when things get tough. That mindset will help me in school and in my career.

Q: If a friend or family member were considering college, what is the No. 1 reason you would recommend Northwest Vista College?

A: I would most definitely recommend NVC and have already done so, because of the support system. The professors and resources actually help you stay on track and improve. It’s a place where you can grow and build confidence while still being challenged.
