Vanessa Kearn, a mother of three, began attending NVC three years ago. She credits a caring professor for giving her the courage to step outside of her comfort zone so that she can achieve her dream of earning a college degree.

Q: Describe a moment when a piece of data, a grade, or feedback completely changed your direction?

A: A moment that truly changed my direction happened in the fall of 2024. I was taking a psychology course, and professor Montanye saw something in me that I didn’t fully see in myself at the time. She not only believed in my abilities but also personally asked to mentor me. That alone meant so much, but what really shifted my perspective was when she encouraged me to apply for a study abroad program to take another class with her in social psychology. As a single mother of three, the idea of studying abroad felt unrealistic and out of reach. It wasn’t something I had ever seriously considered for myself. But her confidence in me made me start questioning my own limits. Her encouragement became the turning point. I began to see that I was capable of more than I had allowed myself to believe. That moment changed my direction by pushing me outside of my comfort zone and opening my mind to opportunities I would have otherwise overlooked. It reminded me that sometimes all it takes is one person believing in you to help you believe in yourself.

Q: Beyond the degree itself, what is the ‘invisible' skill you developed at NVC that you believe will be your greatest asset in the workforce or at your next university?

A: Northwest Vista College has given me something beyond just an education; it has given me confidence in myself. I’ve learned that I am capable of earning a degree, even while balancing life. That belief in my own abilities is something I didn’t always have, and now it’s one of my greatest strengths. I’ve also developed resilience and determination. Managing school, family, and responsibilities has taught me how to stay focused, push through challenges, and not give up when things get difficult. These are skills I know will continue to help me succeed in my future education at UT San Antonio.

Q: If a friend or family member were considering college, what is the No. 1 reason you would recommend Northwest Vista College?

A: The number one reason I would recommend Northwest Vista College is the supportive and encouraging environment. The staff and professors truly care about their students and want to see them succeed. They are always willing to help, answer questions, and guide you toward accomplishing your goal of earning your degree. That kind of support makes a huge difference, especially for students who may feel unsure or overwhelmed. At NVC, you’re not just another student, you’re someone they genuinely want to see succeed.

I am so grateful for the staff at Northwest Vista College. They have always been incredibly helpful, supportive, and encouraging throughout my journey. No matter what challenges I faced, there was always someone willing to guide me and help me keep moving forward.
