Why Academic Standing Matters

Academic probation or dismissal can affect your ability to register for courses and may impact financial aid, veterans benefits or insurance coverage. Meet with your certified advisor if you have questions about your standing.

Academic Standing Categories

Good Standing

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Academic Probation

  • Your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.
  • You must earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • You may be limited to 12 credit hours.
  • Progress Report required.
  • Enrollment in SDEV 0171 (Strategies for Success) is expected. A grade of “C” or better is required.

Continued Academic Probation

  • You remain below a cumulative GPA of 2.0 after one semester on probation.
  • You must meet all probation requirements until both semester and cumulative GPA reach 2.0.
  • Progress Report and advisor meetings required.

Academic Dismissal Levels

First Academic Dismissal

  • Occurs if semester GPA is below 2.0 while on probation.
  • Must sit out one semester or submit a petition for re-enrollment.
  • Enrollment limited to 6–8 credit hours when approved.
  • SDEV 0171 must be completed with a “C” or better if not already taken.

Second Academic Dismissal

  • If your petitioning semester GPA is below 2.0, you must sit out a full 16-week semester.
  • If re-enrolled, you are limited to 6–8 credit hours.
  • SDEV 0171 required unless previously completed.

Third (Permanent) Academic Dismissal

  • You must sit out a full academic year (Fall, Spring and Summer).
  • You may petition after one year through the Dean of your major/degree.
  • Approval is not guaranteed.

For 1st, 2nd and 3rd dismissals: Please email sac-acadstandards@alamo.edu and include your full name and Banner ID for dismissal petition process. Please allow 3 to 5 business days for a response.

Note: Wintermester and Maymester are not available for students on Academic Dismissal.

Progress Report (Probation or Dismissal)

  • Required at midterm: Week 4 for 8-week sessions and Week 8 for 16-week sessions.
  • Must be submitted before registration begins for the next term.
  • Late submissions lose early registration privileges.

How to Petition

  • Download and complete the typed form (handwritten forms not accepted).
  • Attach a typed reflection statement.
  • Submit the packet to the Advising Institute.
  • Expect a response within 3–7 business days via your ACES email.
  • Incomplete petitions will not be reviewed.

Summary

  • If your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, expect probation or dismissal restrictions.
  • Meet with your advisor early, enroll in SDEV 0171 and use campus support services.
  • Review petition deadlines and follow instructions closely.
  • Stay in communication with your advisor to stay on track.
