How do I check out books, media items, laptops, and more?

While the Library is in Virtual Reference Desk mode, the physical collection is only available through curbside service. No Course Reserve materials are available for check out at this time. This is subject to change.

If you need assistance in locating a book or article, please email the librarians at nlc-reference@alamo.edu and we will try to locate it for you. Please note that not all articles are freely accessible from databases and the web. We will do our best to assist you.

 

Just bring your student ID to the Circulation Desk and we will gladly check out your items. You can get a free student ID by visiting Student Services, and any valid ALAMO ID will work at any ALAMO Library. Some items have restricted circulation definitions. Staff can assist you determine which sources can circulate and for how long.

How many library items can I check out?

Students may have up to 15 items checked out at a time. No more than 5 of these items may be media. Most Reference materials can can be checked out for 4 hours with come available for a 3-day or 7-day check out.

Where can I go if I need help with a research paper or assignment?
The Library's Virtual Reference Desk will be manned from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday. We will be closed on Saturday and Sunday. During open hours, you can contact us via chat, email, or phone: (210) 486-5388. To chat with us, click on the green chat box button located in the lower left-hand corner of the Library's website or on the LibGuides. Do you have a question while we are closed? Email it to nlc-reference@alamo.edu. We will respond by the next business day.

 

Head for the Reference Desk. Reference Librarians are happy to assist you get started with your research project. If you need assistance with structuring your paper, you can also get help in the Academic Support Center on the 2nd floor of the library.

How long can I keep library items checked out?

Student check-out periods are 21 days for books and media. Check-out periods are shorter near the end of a semester. The other ALAMO Libraries may have different circulation periods for their items.

Can I renew my items?

Yes (except for media). You can do this yourself via the NLC Discovery Online Catalog. Click on the Sign In button at thetop righthand corner of the page. Use your ACES login information. Your first name will appear at the top righthand corner of the screen. Click on the dropdown menu, choose My Account. Click the Renew button to the right of the title you would like to renew.

How much are library overdue fines?

Overdue media accrues fines at a rate of $0.50 day up to $25.00. Non-media accrue fines at a rate of $0.10 per day up to $25.00. Contact the Library for more information on how to pay for a fine or the replacement cost for a lost item.

Can I request items from other libraries?

Yes! Currently enrolled NLC students, faculty, and staff may request to have items from other ALAMO Libraries sent to NLC for them. Just check the ALAMO Library Online Catalog for holdings and availability, then fill out one of our Interlibrary Loan Request Forms for the type of material you are needing. These forms can be used for both lending requests from within Alamo Colleges as well as outside Alamo Colleges.
