Technical Requirements and Support

Hardware and Software Requirements

Online courses require ready access to a computer that meets the following technical standards:

  1. Internet Connectivity: Local or National ISP Internet Service Provider (ISP) (AOL not recommended)
    • Modem: 33.6 Kbps (56Kbps – V.90 compliant or better recommended)
    • Cable or DSL Broadband recommended 
  2. Firewalls and Proxy Servers

    If you are using a campus or company network to complete an online class, verify that there are no firewalls or proxy servers between your workstation and the Internet, as either can prevent you from connecting to the server for your class.

Canvas (For more information):

  1. Internet Browser: Canvas recommends using the newest version of
    • Firefox
    • Chrome
    • Safari
  2. Disable Pop-up blockers or allow aces.alamo.edu as an exception  (more information)
  3. Recommended Free Browser Plug-Ins: Adobe Flash, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Java

Using mobile applications (Android, iOS) to access Canvas: (more information) alamo.instructure.com is the institution's URL to access Canvas on your mobile device
