From Challenges to Achievements: Kathryn’s Drive for a Brighter Future
September 26, 2025

As graduation approached for Kathryn Favila, a senior at Legacy of Educational Excellence (LEE) High School, she became increasingly concerned about her future as she heard stories of students going into debt to pay for college.
However, her worries eased when her support network mentioned that if she attended the Alamo Colleges District (ACD), she might be eligible to have 100% of her tuition and fees covered by AlamoPROMISE.
"My boyfriend's cousin attended the same high school as I did and was familiar with AlamoPROMISE. When I was exploring my options with my counselor, she suggested the Alamo Colleges as a cost-effective way for me to achieve my associate degree," said Kathryn.
These helpful conversations led Kathryn to enroll in the Business Administration program at San Antonio College (SAC).
Now, her days are filled with intellectually stimulating courses, such as economics, accounting, and business math. Despite the rigorous coursework, Kathryn maintains an impressive 3.8 GPA.
Kathryn is grateful that AlamoPROMISE has allowed her to focus on her studies without overworking to afford college.
“AlamoPROMISE has improved my education and reduced my stress levels. It has given me the confidence to succeed in my classes and motivated me to pursue my long-term goals," said Kathryn.
Outside of her studies, Kathryn enjoys spending time with her three pugs and visiting parks with her younger cousins.
Reflecting on her experience at SAC, Kathryn mentions how beneficial the Mega Lab has been to her and encourages more students to seek out the support offered across the District.
"Take advantage of all the resources provided. They are designed to help students,” said Kathryn.
As a first-generation college student, Kathryn hopes to be a role model for her younger cousins and make her family proud.
“I want to show my family that they can go to college and still enjoy all the beauty that life has to offer,” said Kathryn.
Her family and boyfriend were in attendance when she was recognized as the AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month at the September 2025 ACD Board of Trustees Meeting.
After graduating from SAC this fall, Kathryn plans to transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Management.
She hopes to intern with USAA Bank and, in the future, start a nonprofit organization for dogs and cats and earn a Master's degree.
"My time at Alamo Colleges has helped me step out of my comfort zone and realize the person I have become over the years," said Kathryn.
