From Determination to Dreams: Alejandra’s Journey at NLC
May 21, 2026

As a senior at Madison High School, Alejandra Hernandez saw college as an impossible dream, not because of academic demands, but because of the cost.
That changed when her advisor told her she qualified for AlamoPROMISE, a program that covers 100% of tuition and fees at the Alamo Colleges District (ACD). For Alejandra, a first-generation college student, the opportunity transformed her future and turned what once felt unattainable into reality.
“I never thought college was possible,” Alejandra said. “When I learned that my tuition would be covered through AlamoPROMISE, it relieved a lot of my stress about my future.”
Now studying Criminal Justice at Northeast Lakeview College (NLC), Alejandra credits AlamoPROMISE with removing the financial burden of college and allowing her to focus on her studies. With that support, she has earned a 3.5 GPA while balancing school, work, and community service.
“The savings I’m gaining now through the AlamoPROMISE program will help me financially now and, in the future, as I continue my education,” said Alejandra.
Outside the classroom, Alejandra’s strong work ethic is evident in every aspect of her life. She works at the H-E-B Fulfillment Center, helping complete product orders for delivery to H-E-B stores across the San Antonio region.
Despite her busy schedule, Alejandra remains committed to serving her community. In her free time, she volunteers with the San Antonio Food Bank, helping cook and serve meals to individuals experiencing homelessness. She also participates in wheelchair basketball games that support children with disabilities.
At NLC, Alejandra said she found a supportive environment that helped her grow academically and personally.
“My instructors have been so supportive, and they have always been there to answer all of my questions, offer assistance, and remind me that I belong here,” said Alejandra. “They gave me the confidence to believe in myself.”
As a first-generation student, one of the biggest lessons Alejandra has learned is that college is not something students have to navigate alone.
“You’re not going through it alone,” said Alejandra. “Advisors and professors are all helpful and go above and beyond for students.”
Alejandra’s perseverance and commitment to academic success earned her recognition as the AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month for May 2026. She was honored during the ACD Board of Trustees meeting, where her family attended to celebrate her achievement.
During the meeting, Alejandra thanked the Board of Trustees and Alamo Colleges District leadership for creating opportunities for students like her.
As Alejandra shook the hands of the Board of Trustees, she handed ACD Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores a handwritten note expressing gratitude for the leadership and strategic guidance that helped students achieve their goals.
After completing her associate's degree at NLC, Alejandra plans to transfer to either The University of Texas at Austin or The University of Texas at San Antonio to earn her bachelor’s degree. From there, she hopes to attend St. Mary’s University School of Law and become an attorney.
Reflecting on her journey, Alejandra believes AlamoPROMISE has helped her overcome the fear and uncertainty that often come with being the first in a family to attend college.
“AlamoPROMISE has helped me overcome the nerves of being a first-generation college student and helped me feel like I belong in college,” said Alejandra.
Alejandra’s story is a powerful example of how opportunity, support, and determination can turn even the biggest dreams into reality.
