Strategies of Behavioral Intervention (SOBI)

Strategies of Behavioral Intervention (SOBI)

The Strategies of Behavioral Intervention (SOBI) policy at the Alamo Colleges District was created to guide our College community to recognize, prevent and respond to students-of-concern, or incidents that are disruptive, threatening, or violent. When in doubt, please report!

Examples of concerning behaviors include (but are not limited to):

  • signs of harassment
  • intimidation
  • extreme anxiety,
  • depression,
  • threatening harm,
  • erratic behavior, or
  • disconnect from reality.

Faculty and staff are often in a position to recognize students who are at risk; however, students are encouraged to review the SOBI guidelines and report concerning behaviors to the SOBI response team.

The Northwest Vista College SOBI Response Team consists of the Interim Vice President of Student Success, Janie Scott, along with Student Advocacy staff, disability specialists, veteran's affairs staff, and campus police. Please call us for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use mental health services?

All ACD students who are currently enrolled are eligible to use the mental health services.

How much do the mental health services cost?

CrisisNow, TimelyCare, and counseling services at our Advocacy Centers are free for all students. Wellness 360 psychiatric services are available for as little as $5 per visit for students. See the Wellness360 section for more details.

Is there a limit to how often I can use mental health services?

Counseling and TimelyCare (both counseling and psychiatric care) services are determined by the provider and the student working together to determine how to best support the student based on their unique situation.

Will my professors, staff, or family know if I receive mental health support?

No. All mental health services are confidential. Information is not shared with anyone without a student’s written authorization. Please note that there are limited exceptions to confidentiality, which will be disclosed to you before your first appointment.

Are virtual or telehealth appointments available?

Yes. TimelyCare, counseling services through our Advocacy Centers, and Wellness 360 all offer virtual appointment options.

What’s the difference between counseling and psychiatric care?

Great question! Counseling Services are offered by licensed mental health professionals who discuss challenges that impact a student’s well-being. The services include safety assessments and utilizing evidence-based techniques to help students address personal, social, and mental health issues. Providers help students learn new skills and strategies that lead to self-discovery and long-term change.

Psychiatric Services are offered by psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses who diagnose mental health conditions and treat them through medication management. They also discuss the biological and psychological elements of a mental health disorder.
