Learn about yourself with an online career coach

September 6, 2019

Picture yourself in five years. What is your career? Are you a cybersecurity specialist? Are you an electrician? Perhaps you work in a lab, studying blood pathogens. Every person has unique strengths and interests, as well as specific career goals. It’s exciting to imagine your future, but to get started, you must take certain steps. The first of these is determining which online program at the Alamo Colleges you want to enroll in. Not sure what you want to enroll in?

Alamo Colleges offers an online career exploration tool, called Career Coach, with several available resources, most notably a free career assessment. You can take either a six or sixty question version of the career assessment, either of which will indicate your top three areas of interest. For example, if you are interested in writing and playing instruments and answered those questions accordingly, you would score high on the “Artistic” category. Within the “Artistic” category, you might then explore careers like a graphic designer or an art teacher. You can then investigate the average salary and required education for various careers. If your other two areas intrigue you, feel free to explore related career options and courses. Although taking the actual assessment provides a tangible starting place for your career goals, it also helps you articulate your unique interests and passions, some of which might be new to you.

This exercise is one of many helpful tools that we offer at the Alamo Colleges because we know taking online courses is an important decision that will support your career goals. We believe in you and want to help you make your dreams a reality.

According to the Online College Students 2019 report, ninety-three percent of online students join a program to fulfill career aspirations. Fifty-three percent enroll in an online program with the goal of starting a new career, and eighteen percent are preparing for their first professional jobs. These findings indicate that many of you are in a similar place, starting or perhaps, deepening your professional identity while taking online courses. This is no simple feat and it’s helpful to utilize the resources and support that we offer at the Alamo Colleges.
