Alamo Colleges District Hosts 2nd Annual Statewide Convening Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Students
August 18, 2026
The Alamo Colleges District, in partnership with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, welcomed advocates, higher education professionals, parenting liaisons and institutional leaders from across Texas and the nation for the 2nd Annual Statewide Convening on Best Practices to Support Pregnant and Parenting Students on Friday, Aug. 7, at Northwest Vista College.
Supporting student parents is an increasingly important priority for higher education institutions. In fall 2025, the Alamo Colleges District identified nearly 9,000 parenting students. Among students outside of dual credit, approximately 18% are raising children while pursuing their education.
Nationally, more than 1.5 million community and technical college students are parents. In Texas, approximately 88,000 parenting students were identified at colleges and universities in spring 2025, although national research suggests the actual number may be significantly higher.
The program included special remarks from Waylon Metoyer, director of student success with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, as well as Alamo Colleges District parenting students who shared their perspectives and experiences.
The event also featured a keynote presentation from Theresa Anderson, Kate Westaby and Kimberly Sanchez, co-founders of the SPARK Collaborative, who highlighted strategies and approaches to better support student parents.
