Alamo Colleges District Opens La Línea/The Line: Works by Vincent Valdez at ACCESS Common Ground Gallery
October 8, 2026
On Wednesday, October 7th, the Alamo Colleges District opened La Línea/The Line: Works by Vincent Valdez, an exhibition featuring more than two decades of work by nationally recognized San Antonio native and the Alamo Colleges' inaugural Artist-in-Residence, Vincent Valdez.
The exhibition opened with a public reception on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the Common Ground Gallery at ACCESS.
Acclaimed artist Vincent Valdez was named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow, one of the nation’s most prestigious honors recognizing exceptional creativity and promise.
La Línea/The Line brings together paintings, drawings, printmaking and sculpture that reflect Valdez’s enduring exploration of lineage — personal, cultural, historical and artistic. Across his career, Valdez has returned to questions of inheritance and the stories carried through family, memory, communities and collective history.
“I am grateful to share my work with the Alamo Colleges District community,” Valdez said. “It has been well over a decade since I’ve presented a one-person exhibition in this city, and I hope it offers a glimpse into my long visual journey that once began here.”

At the center of the exhibition is Valdez’s ongoing La Línea/The Line series, presented prominently for the first time. The artworks trace the artist’s familial bloodline while opening into a broader reflection on the histories and experiences of Chicano, Mexican American and Latinx communities in the United States.
The works explore the visible and invisible lines connecting generations while examining themes of ancestry, memory, place, identity and cultural continuity.

“Vincent Valdez’s residency has created meaningful opportunities for our students and community to experience the arts as a powerful way to learn, reflect and connect,” said Dr. Mike Flores, Alamo Colleges District Chancellor. “This exhibition represents our district-wide commitment to making transformative arts experiences accessible while creating spaces where students can explore their own stories, histories and possibilities.”
Valdez was named the Alamo Colleges District’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence for the 2025–2026 academic year, marking an important milestone in the work of the Alamo Colleges District Visual and Performing Arts Commission.
Throughout his residency, Valdez has engaged with students, faculty and members of the community through classroom visits designed to deepen critical thinking, encourage artistic expression and create opportunities for dialogue through the arts.
“This partnership offers an important opportunity — an exchange of ideas, personal stories and social histories, in a moment when building community and supporting our youth matters most,” Valdez said when his residency was announced.
A San Antonio native, Valdez has earned national and international recognition for large-scale representational works that draw from traditions of history painting, muralism and cinema while examining contemporary American life.

In addition to being named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow, Valdez’s career includes honors such as the Ford and Mellon Foundations Latinx Artist Fellowship in 2022 and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Painters and Sculptors in 2016. He has also participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting, Vermont Studio Center, Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and Arion Press.
Valdez’s work is represented in collections including the Alamo Colleges District, Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, MASS MoCA, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Ford Foundation.
