Alexander Scoggins: Made to Persevere
July 16, 2025
Alexander’s story is about more than school. It’s about starting over, providing for his family, and persevering through every setback.
Alexander Scoggins didn’t just return to college—he clawed his way back. After attending a college institution that was no longer accredited, working multiple jobs, and preparing for the birth of his first child, Alexander chose to build a better future for his family through AlamoONLINE at Northeast Lakeview College.
Alexander earned his Cyber Defense degree with nearly 60-hour work weeks and a long list of certifications, proving that perseverance isn’t just a word. It’s a way of life.
“I never imagined going back to school,” he said. “I already had a degree. But when life kind of fell apart, I realized I needed to rebuild, and this time, I wanted to do it right.” |

A Family-Fueled Comeback
Alexander’s turning point came when he learned he and his wife were expecting a baby. At the time, he was dealing with the pressure of unemployment, the loss of stability, and a sense that he’d run out of road. But with a child on the way, the stakes changed.
“Suddenly, my goals weren’t just mine anymore,” he said. “I had someone depending on me.”
He chose the Cyber Defense program through #AlamoONLINE at Northeast Lakeview College for one reason: Flexibility. “I work full time, take contract gigs, and help run cybersecurity competitions,” Alexander said. “Being able to do everything online was the only way this could work.” Being a father and dedicated to success in school was viable through online courses.
Perseverance in Action
Juggling two jobs and parenting responsibilities would be enough for most people, but Alexander didn’t stop there. He earned several key cybersecurity certifications in less than a year. These industry-recognized credentials gave him confidence, momentum, and a serious edge in the job market.
And yet, the biggest challenge wasn’t technical—it was personal.
“For a long time, I didn’t think I could do something like this,” he shared. “But I realized I had to accept that it’s a part of me and still choose to keep going. That’s what ‘persevere’ means to me. It doesn’t mean you're never tired or overwhelmed. It means you keep showing up anyway.”
From Learner to Leader
Alexander thrived in the cyber program. As a mentor with the KnightHax team, he’s helped coach and compete in cybersecurity tournaments, placing in national rankings. He’s gone from feeling defeated to mentoring others through the industry that gave him a second chance.
“When people ask me how I do it, I just say: one day at a time,” he said. “Some days are hard. Some days I’m running on two hours of sleep. But every class, every challenge—it’s worth it. I’m building something.” |

A Future Built on Purpose
Looking ahead, Alexander is focused on securing a long-term career in cybersecurity to give his family the security they deserve. “My wife has supported me every step of the way,” he said. “And now my daughter grows up seeing that no matter what happens, you can always start again.”
His message to others thinking about going back to school: Start. Even if you’re scared. Even if you think it’s too late.
