Christian Alvarado earns a fully online degree with support and course flexibility

Christian Alvarado was eager to earn a degree in Cyber Defense. She became interested in protecting the digital world and wanted to advance her career. However, Christian was a single mother to eight children. For her to earn a degree, she needed a flexible degree plan and a strong support system. That's when she decided to earn her fully-online associate degree in Cyber Defense at Northeast Lakeview College (NLC).
"I chose online learning because it was easier for my family," Christian said. "It was convenient. I could raise my kids, spend time with them, and still pursue my degree. I could also work on my studies anywhere.”
Christian also found a community of caring faculty and staff who guided her to success. She says she felt comfortable reaching out to her professors for help. "I made sure to set my goals and if I wasn’t meeting those, I would reach out to my professors,” she said. “I could easily contact them. They were responsive and wanted to see me succeed.”

One professor offered support that became incredibly meaningful to Christian during one of life’s toughest moments. |
"Recently, my daughter had a severe seizure that required her to be intubated. During that time, my entire focus was on her, and I completely lost track of my deadlines,” Christian shared. “I reached out to my professor, and they responded with empathy and understanding. It lifted an enormous weight off my shoulders and allowed me to focus entirely on my daughter." Despite these challenges, Christian kept a clear vision on the future. She became an A+ student and was inducted into several notable societies, including Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Society, and the National Society of Leadership and Success
She says she always took advantage of the resources available, even on campus.
As an online student, I can still access on-campus resources like the tutoring lab on campus. I spent a lot of hours there, Christian. |
I appreciated that there are people who can help you. I can even access the Wi-Fi at NLC, which is convenient. That's the icing on the cake.
Reflecting on her journey, Christian says she felt secure in the support she received from her family of eight, NLC professors, and staff. Her experience has inspired her to encourage others to take the next step.
"For anyone considering online learning, I say - go for it," said Christian. "It's hard work going to school and maintaining a household, but I found a balance. It's challenging at times but there are people there to help you. Use your resources and I think you'll find success."
