Lui Butcher: Made to be Confident
April 23, 2025
Luli Butcher’s story of uncertainty to confidence and earning a fully online degree

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Luli Butcher moved to the United States at 21. She didn’t speak much English but later became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Life moved forward – she met her husband, started a family, and worked as a Spanish tutor for many years. Now, Luli wants to invest in her education and earn a degree. She searched for a degree plan that could fit seamlessly into her busy life but still felt certain about her English skills. Luli took a leap of faith and pursued a fully online associate degree in Education from Palo Alto College.

“Being an online student allows me to focus on my family and gives me time to complete coursework,” said Luli. |
My kids have a busy schedule, so I study while they're at school and still make time for their extracurriculars and help them with their homework. I liked how it fit around my life."
Throughout her journey, Luli maintained passing grades. She practiced time management and studied while her kids were at school. She would finish her studies early and find a balance between life and schooling, leading her to earn A’s and B’s in her first semester.
Luli started becoming more confident in her English. She says she appreciated the availability she received from her professors and their willingness to help.
“My instructors have always been available to discuss topics and instructions as if I were in class,” said Luli. |
"They're always very quick to reply to my emails, which has been great. I've never felt that distance was an issue at all."
Luli also participated in online student discussions, enjoying responding to her classmates and seeing their responses back.
"The instructors offered a variety of ways to learn, like videos and class discussions," said Luli. "I would respond to my comments on discussion boards, and I really liked that a lot. It was exciting to be able to write to them so well."
Now, as Luli is finishing her degree, she sees a whole new side to herself—one that is descriptive and vibrant in her English writing and speaking. She credits her online learning experience and the professors who guided her along the journey.
"From when I first came to the U.S. to now, I've seen a lot of progress," Luli shared. "My writing has become more expressive. I know how to put my own words and my feelings into writing. My professors helped me build this new confidence"
