The Alamo Colleges District now offers students a Summer Momentum Plan that saves eligible students time and money. The plan allows students who earn 18-24 credit hours in the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters at any of the five colleges at the Alamo Colleges District, to get three to six FREE credit hours in the Summer 2018 semester.

The Summer Momentum Plan enables more students to achieve the life-long benefits of college, with less financial stress. Students can earn their degree in less time, save money and use their financial aid more effectively.

What is it and who is eligible?

Students who earn a total of 24 or more credit hours in the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 (any combination) semesters, at any of the five colleges, at the Alamo Colleges District, get up to six free academic credit hours in the summer, at a yearly tuition savings of $516. This allows them to earn the 60 credit hours needed for their degree in just two years.

Students who earn a total of 18-23 credit hours, at any of the five colleges, at the Alamo Colleges District, in the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 (any combination) semester, get three free academic credit hours in the summer, at a yearly tuition savings of $258, allowing them to complete their degree in three years. Out-of-district students can save even more. The free summer credit hours must be taken at any of the five colleges, in the Alamo Colleges District, in the summer semester immediately following the qualifying fall and spring semesters.

Eligible students can attend any of the five colleges in the Alamo Colleges District, which offer fields of study in a wide range of areas, including accounting, biotechnology, business, computer science, criminal justice, early childhood education, nursing, and paralegal. All Alamo Colleges earned credit hours (Credit Courses with a grade of "C" or better) count toward the Summer Momentum Plan free hours.

Students are encouraged to take hours within their program plan.

How do students know if they are approved for the Summer Momentum Plan?

Students do not need to be approved for the Summer Momentum Plan. They will just need to meet the Alamo Colleges District Earned Credit Hours Qualifications and Hours Requirement.

When will my tuition be credited if I am eligible for the Summer Momentum Plan?

Tuition will credited in May 2018.

What courses will be counted as earned credits?

Only credits earned at any of the five colleges, in the Alamo Colleges District, will be counted upon meeting eligibility. Alamo Colleges District earned credit courses with a grade of “C” or better. Transfer hours are not counted as earned credit hours.

How many credit hours need to be taken to earn free summer semester tuition?

18 Alamo Colleges District earned credit hours combined (any combination) in the fall and spring semesters will earn 3 academic credit hours free for the following summer semester. 24 Alamo Colleges District earned credit hours combined (any combination) in the fall and spring semesters will earn 6 academic hours free for the following summer semester. Students are encouraged to take hours within their program plan.

Is there a waiver/paperwork that needs to be completed with the Financial Aid/Bursars Office?

No paperwork will need to be completed. Eligibility is determined after grades have been posted for the spring 8-week and 16-week terms.

Can the free hours be carried over to future summer semesters?

No. The free hours must be taken in the summer semester immediately following the fall and spring semesters when the qualifying hours were taken.

Are students allowed to split the terms? An example is 3 credit hours in Summer I and 3 credit hours in Summer II?

Yes, students can split the credit hours as long as the student is enrolled in 6 hours total for the summer semester.

Can the "free" hours be taken in the Maymester term?

No. Maymester does not count towards Alamo Colleges District hour’s requirement nor Alamo Colleges District earned hours Qualification.

 

Will students be reimbursed or not charged up front?

Students will be charged as usual and the Payment application will be automated, so there will be no need to pay up front, unless it is for a Maymester registration or for additional hours registered; above your eligible, free Summer Momentum Plan, 3/6 hours earned.

Are there any fees that will not be covered?

The Summer Momentum Plan will only cover regular tuition. It will not cover fees, Special Program Tuition, Instructional Materials Charges, 3 Peat, 27 HR Rule, etc.

Are there any rules associated with the student being eligible?

The rules are the student must meet the Alamo Colleges District Earned Credit Hours Qualifications and Hours Requirement, maintain a current account balance and resolve any outstanding Money HOLD’s before the Summer Momentum Plan can be applied for the Summer Term.

Which hours are eligible for the Summer Momentum Plan free hours?

Most hours are eligible for the Summer Momentum Plan free hours, with a few exceptions. Students are encouraged to take hours within their program plan. The free earned summer semester 3/6 hours will be applied to academic courses only.

Are developmental class hours counted towards the free summer credit hour total?

Yes, Alamo Colleges District earned, developmental class hours billed at regular tuition schedule will count towards eligibility for the Summer Momentum Plan.

Can out-of-district and non-resident students participate in the Summer Momentum Plan?

Yes. In District, Out-of-District, Non-Resident/ International students are eligible to participate.

Who can answer questions about qualifying for the Summer Momentum Plan, cumulative hours, grades, GPA., etc.?

If I register for 6 or 8 week summer sessions that fall under the Summer Momentum Plan, will I need to pay for my Maymester class?

Yes, Maymester classes will need to be paid by the Maymester payment deadline.

If I qualify for an exemption/ waiver to reduce my tuition, will I be able to use the Summer Momentum Plan?

Yes, the Summer Momentum Plan can be used. The Summer Momentum Plan is applied on the student account, as the first source of payment, Exemption/ Waivers are applied on the student account second and used to reduce any “remaining eligible tuition and fee charges”, covered under the exemption/ waiver.

If a student is registered for more than the free 3/6 hours will they be able to use the payment plan option for the balance they are paying out of pocket?

Will the student need to wait to set up the payment plan until after the tuition charges are waived to avoid paying for the free hours?
Students with a minimum balance of $100 in eligible tuition and fee charges may sign up for a Payment Plan. Students are encouraged to visit the Summer 2018 Registration/ Payment Calendar: http://www.alamo.edu/calendars/ for Payment Deadlines and Payment Plan availability, etc. A payment plan initiated May 1st- May 21st, prior to the Summer Momentum Plan payment application, will be inclusive of all tuition and fee charges owed, for the term, at the time the payment plan is executed. Once the Summer Momentum Plan is applied to a student account, the Payment Plan will adjust accordingly, followed by an automated email sent to the student.

What if I still owe money, after the Summer Momentum Plan is applied?

Student is responsible to make payment on any remaining balance, according to the Summer 2018 Registration/ Payment Calendar http://www.alamo.edu/calendars/. Any unpaid tuition and fee balance may result in students being dropped from all courses. .

Will I be able to use my sponsored (3rd Party Billing) tuition assistance?

The sponsored (3rd Party Billing) tuition assistance cannot be used towards the 3/6 FREE credit hours, but can be used towards any remaining eligible tuition and fee charges, covered under the sponsored (3rd Party Billing) tuition assistance.

If you are getting credit from a study abroad institution and only transferring the hours in, does that count?

No, transfer hours are not counted as earned credit hours, these include the study abroad courses paid through Marketplace.

I am a Dual Credit student, do I qualify?

No, students participating in a High School Programs (Traditional Dual Credit, Early College High School, Academies), early admit and transient students are not eligible for the Summer Momentum Plan.

If a class is not successfully completed will students have to pay tuition back?

The Summer Momentum Plan is a non-refundable program, and a student may owe money back for a course dropped prior to Census, for any Part of Term. All Adds/ Drops should be completed prior to the start of related term. Refer to summer 2018 Registration/ Payment Calendar.

Drops after the start of class will have SMP Scholarship adjustments, resulting in a balance on the student account. The award can be reinstated if the student registers for a class in a later part of the term. Lack of academic success in the summer class (or classes) may not drive repayment. Students should be aware that failure to successfully complete your courses might impact your Satisfactory Academic Progress for financial aid or Academic Standing.

Will the Summer Momentum Plan, have an impact on other Financial Assistance?

Will the Summer Momentum Plan, have an impact on other Financial Assistance?

  • A student’s Pell Grant award is not impacted
  • In some cases, other federal aid such as loans or work-study may be adjusted when necessary if the student does not have sufficient “unmet need” to be compliant with federal regulations.
