For Alberto Llamas, music is more than a passion, it's a way to teach, connect, and preserve his Mexican American culture while inspiring others.
As Alberto’s senior year at Holmes High School was coming to an end, he learned from his counselor that he was eligible to have 100% of his tuition and fees covered at the Alamo Colleges District (ACD) through AlamoPROMISE. That opportunity ultimately shaped his decision to enroll.
“I had heard many good things about the Alamo Colleges. It felt like a strong Hispanic community where the staff and professors make you feel at home. From my experience, that has been very true,” said Alberto.
Now studying Music Education at Northwest Vista College (NVC), Alberto has demonstrated both dedication and resilience, earning a 3.27 GPA while remaining deeply involved on campus.
Outside the classroom, Alberto’s leadership and commitment to culture are evident in everything he does. He serves as Vice President of SOMOS MÁS, where he both learns about and shares Mexican American culture with fellow students. He also performs with the student group La Autoridad on campus and throughout San Antonio, and co-hosts the Wildcast Spanish Podcast, helping Spanish-speaking students stay informed and connected to vital resources.
Alberto’s passion for education has had a ripple effect beyond his own journey. His greatest inspiration, his mother Norma, is now continuing her education at NVC too.
“I come from a Mexican family that taught me the values of hard work, respect, and never giving up. My mom is the ultimate example of what the word 'strength' truly means,” said Alberto.
NVC's supportive community has played a significant role in Alberto’s musical journey and has opened unexpected doors, such as La Autoridad performing before the April 2026 ACD Board of Trustees Meeting.
“We were playing music by the lake at NVC when Ms. Lucero Saldaña approached us and asked if we were playing corridos tumbados. After that moment, and thanks to God and her support, La Autoridad became what it is today,” said Alberto.
In recognition of his achievements, Alberto was named the April 2026 AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month. He was introduced during the ACD Board of Trustees Meeting by NVC President Dr. Amy Bosley. She described him as “an amazing musician and shining example of what happens when academic excellence meets a deep sense of purpose.”
Dr. Bosley continued, “He is absolutely a powerful testament to how Alamo Promise doesn't just open a door. It provides the foundation for students to become the leaders of our city that our city needs.”
During the meeting, Alberto addressed the board in Spanish, thanking trustees, faculty, professors, friends, and family for their support.
“If there is one thing I have learned, it is that you don't need to have everything perfectly planned out in order to go far in life. Sometimes, all you need to do is simply give it your absolute best.”
Looking ahead, Alberto plans to transfer to the University of Texas at San Antonio to continue his studies in education and advocacy. He hopes to become a mariachi director, using music to guide and inspire future generations.
“Mariachi is something I’m very passionate about, and I want to inspire future generations the same way I was inspired,” said Alberto.
Reflecting on his time at NVC, Alberto credits his experience with shaping both his personal and academic growth.
"My journey has been full of growth, opportunities, and meaningful connections. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received and excited for what’s ahead,” said Alberto.
Alberto’s journey highlights the power of culture, community, and opportunity, showing how passion and purpose can come together to create meaningful impact.
