$3M from Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation Supports Nursing Students in the Alamo Colleges District

The Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation has made a $3 million scholarship commitment to nursing students across the Alamo Colleges District to help learners complete degrees and enter the critical profession.

The three-year, $1 million annual investment supports up to 334 Nursing students across the Alamo Colleges District. Beginning this Fall 2026 semester, scholarships are being awarded through the Alamo Colleges Foundation to full-time and part-time students pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing, the primary pathway to becoming a registered nurse, as well as students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at San Antonio College. Priority is given to students who have the greatest needs, are Pell-eligible, first-generation or parenting, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

“The Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation is removing barriers for hundreds of nursing students, helping accelerate their path into one of our region’s most in-demand careers,” said Dr. Mike Flores, Alamo Colleges District Chancellor. “We are so grateful for this transformative contribution to Alamo Colleges Foundation that directly supports San Antonio’s healthcare workforce, strengthens the talent pipeline for students and employers, and helps ensure more families have access to the skilled care they need.”

The visionary gift builds on a growing partnership between the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation and the Alamo Colleges District. Last year, the foundation contributed $300,000 to AlamoPROMISE, supporting 207 students as they pursued higher education across the Alamo Colleges District.

Our partnership with Alamo Colleges provides an amazing opportunity to continue these hopes, and we are thrilled to help these students.”

The Texas Department of State Health Services projects that the state will face a shortage of more than 50,000 registered nurses by 2036. With a 60-year history of helping prepare nurses to serve San Antonio and the surrounding region, the Alamo Colleges District has made it a priority to close that gap, and today operates one of the area’s most comprehensive nursing pipelines, currently serving more than 1,600 nursing students at San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College, Palo Alto College, and Northeast Lakeview College.

Over the next three years, the scholarships provided by the Kate Marmion Foundation are projected to support more than 500 nursing graduates, based on current enrollment patterns. Scholarship funding will be paired with the Alamo Colleges District’s wraparound support services, including emergency aid, food assistance, childcare access, and career preparation, which help students stay enrolled, complete their programs, and enter the workforce.
