You may not be aware that dismissal for scholastic reasons may severely restrict your choices of universities and programs in the future. If you are on financial aid, veteran’s assistance, or a family health insurance policy, you run the risk of losing that assistance. Please take advantage of the opportunity for assistance and guidance that can be gained from academic advisors and faculty so you can avoid a more serious situation in the future.
What is Academic Dismissal?
If a student on Academic Probation or Continued Academic Probation at any of the colleges of the Alamo Colleges District does not earn a semester GPA of 2.0 as well as a cumulative institutional GPA of 2.0 in the semester following their probationary status, they will be placed on Academic Dismissal. In accordance with the Academic Standards policy, students placed on Academic Dismissal are required to sit out one full fall or spring 16-week semester. Students placed on Academic Dismissal will receive ACES email notification informing them of their status at the end of the semester. What happens if I am placed on 1st Academic Dismissal?
The Academic Standards policy at Northwest Vista College states that students who are placed on Academic Dismissal must sit out one (1) full sixteen (16) week semester before they are considered eligible to return. After the sit-out period, students are required to complete the petition process to be considered eligible for registration. Petitions are reviewed with an academic advisor by appointment only.
Students who wish to enroll and not remain out a full fall or spring semester may submit a completed dismissal petition to be considered for an exception. Students granted an exception are able to enroll in classes with the understanding that they must comply with all requirements indicated on the Contract for Students on Academic Dismissal. Submitting a Petition does not guarantee approval. It is at the discretion of the academic advisor to determine if it is the student's best interest to enroll or sit out the 16-week requirement as stated in the policy.
What happens if I am placed on 2nd Academic Dismissal?
The Academic Standards policy at Northwest Vista College states that students who are placed on 2nd Academic Dismissal will be required to sit out one (1) full 16 week semester (Spring or Fall). After the sit-out period, students are required to complete the petition process to be considered eligible to return. Students placed on 2nd Academic Dismissal do not have the option to petition without sitting out.
Petitions are reviewed with an academic advisor by appointment only. Submitting a Petition does not guarantee approval. It is at the discretion of the academic advisor to determine if it is in the student's best interest to return at this time.
What happens if I am placed on 3rd/ Permanent Academic Dismissal?
The Academic Standards policy at Northwest Vista College states that students with three or more Academic Dismissals are not eligible to petition or enroll for a minimum of one full Academic Year (Fall, Spring, Summer). After sitting out the required length of time, students will be required to complete the petition process and submit a completed petition packet to the Academic Standards Appeals committee by email at firstname.lastname@example.org (see deadlines to the right). The committee must receive the dismissal packet by email 7 business days prior to the deadline to be able to review and schedule an appointment with students who's petitions are approved prior to the submission deadline. Late petitions packets are not accepted, and there is no option to submit a packet in person or on a walk in basis.
If minimum academic standards (Good Standing) have been met at another accredited college or university during the period of dismissal, students may re-enroll in Good Standing after visiting with Advising Services and providing an official transcript showing they are in Good Standing (2.0 or higher Cumulative GPA).

Progress Reports are required to be submitted every semester by students on Academic Dismissal until you are back in Good Academic Standing. You will submit your progress report to your assigned academic advisor during an advising session. Progress reports must be completed by each of your instructors before submission. If progress report is not submitted by the deadline you will not be eligible to register for any subsequent semester until final grades post. No progress reports will be accepted or reviewed after the deadline.

Attention Students: The petitions for Academic Dismissal are currently available online. We will begin accepting packets and scheduling interviews beginning Monday, November 12th, 2018. The priority deadline to submit a petition for the Spring 2019 16 week semester is Saturday, December 1st, 2018. The last day to submit a petition for Spring 2019 is Monday, January 7th- however please note that any submissions received after December 1st are not guaranteed an opportunity to interview.

Dismissal Interviews are limited - once all sessions and SDEV 0171 course offerings are full, petitions will no longer be accepted - regardless of the deadline date.
