Alamo Colleges District Board Welcomes New Trustee, Elects New Officers

At a board meeting on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees welcomed a new board trustee, elected new officers, and recognized Dr. Clint Kingsbery as he stepped down as Board Chair.
Dr. Kingsbery’s tenure as chair was marked by record growth, national recognition, continued innovation and strong community support for the future of the Alamo Colleges District. During his time as chair, the District reached nearly 15,000 graduates and 90,000 learners, earned the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for a second time, advanced its award-winning advising model, launched innovations like AlamoU and celebrated the passage of a nearly $1 billion bond to expand access, strengthen programs and prepare more students for high-demand careers.
Dr. Kingsbery will continue serving as the District 8 Trustee. He was first elected to the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees in 2018 and previously served as Board Secretary before being elected Board Chair. A longtime educator, Dr. Kingsbery has dedicated his career to advancing student success and strengthening educational opportunities for the San Antonio community.

Robert Garcia is the Alamo Colleges District’s newest Board Trustee and will serve District 9, succeeding Leslie Sanchowicz who served as District 9 Trustee from December 2020 to June 2026.
Garcia is a certified public accountant and a graduate of Northwest Vista College and the University of Texas at San Antonio. He owns a CPA firm that supports small businesses, nonprofits, and families across San Antonio. Garcia will serve a six-year term.
District 1 Trustee Joe Alderete, Jr., who previously served as Vice-Chair, was elected board chair. District 2 Trustee Gloria Ray, who previously served as Assistant Secretary, is now Vice Chair.
District 3 Trustee Anna U. Bustamante will continue to serve as secretary. District 6 Trustee Dr. Gene Sprague was elected as assistant secretary. Each officer will serve for two years.

Alderete is an intergovernmental affairs consultant who advises on a range of city, county, and state issues. A lifelong resident of San Antonio, he has served his community in multiple capacities for 38 years. He served on the San Antonio City Council for eight years, 1977-1985, and has served on the boards of Catholic Charities, the San Antonio River Oversight Committee, Westside YMCA, Assumption Seminary, and the San Fernando Historic Civic Center Committee.
Ray retired from Kelly Air Force Base as a Senior Official after 27 years of service. She has since served her community as a volunteer on various governance boards at the city, county, and state levels. Ray served 13 years as the elected chair of the Alamo Colleges Citizens Advisory Committees, providing leadership for more than $1 billion in capital improvements, including development of the District's headquarters, which opened in 2019.
Bustamante is a lifelong resident of San Antonio and is a graduate of Southside High School. Bustamante holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Music and a Master of Science in Educational Administration, both from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. She was a longtime Southside ISD educator and previously a music teacher at Southside High School.
Dr. Sprague was first elected to the board in 1994. Sprague holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, a master's in reproductive biology from Colorado State University, and a bachelor's in biology from Northwestern University. He is the recipient of numerous awards in his field and has authored many articles for scientific publications. Sprague was instrumental in establishing Northwest Vista College.
The Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees governs five independently accredited colleges: Palo Alto College, Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, St. Philip's College, and San Antonio College.
